Chicago Bulls 2006 News & Notes
Jay Williams (Point Guard) 8/24/2006
NEWS: Williams worked out for the New Jersey Nets and has been invited to their training camp. The former Chicago Bulls guard is bidding to resurrect his NBA career after a serious motorcycle crash three years ago. Kevin Bradbury, who represents Williams, said Friday the Nets invited the former Duke University star to October's training camp.
NOTES: Nets general manager Ed Stefanski said Thursday that Williams had given "strong indications" he was interested in accepting the invitation. Williams crashed his motorcycle into a light pole in June 2003, fracturing his pelvis and tearing knee ligaments. He was hospitalized for 3 1/2 months and had nerve damage in his left leg. The Bulls bought out his contract for about $3 million.
Martynas Andriuskevicius (Center) 8/18/2006
NEWS: The Cavalies traded Andriuskevicius to the Chicago Bulls for guard Eddie Basden on Friday.
NOTES: Andriuskevicius was a project for the Cavaliers, who acquired the 7-2 Lithuanian last year from Orlando for a second-round draft pick and cash. He played just nine minutes in six games for Cleveland, spending most of the season in the NBA's Developmental League.
Adrian Griffin (Guard-Forward) 8/1/2006
NEWS: The Bulls signed Griffin, luring the seven-year veteran swingman back to Chicago from the Dallas Mavericks. The deal was announced Monday, but terms of the contract were not disclosed.
NOTES: The 6-foot-5 Griffin scored an 4.6 points per game for the Mavericks, who reached the NBA finals last season. He made 45 starts in 52 appearances.
P.J. Brown (Forward-Center) 7/6/2006
NEWS: New Orleans will reportedly deal Brown and guard J.R. Smith to Chicago for center Tyson Chandler when the NBA's moratorium ends next week. The deal, which was agreed to Wednesday, brings Brown to Chicago to provide veteran leadership and depth to the Bulls frontcourt. The power forward will play alongside newly acquired Ben Wallace.
NOTES: Brown averaged 9.0 points and 7.3 rebounds and was the last player to play for the Hornets in Charlotte.
Ben Wallace (Center) 7/4/2006
NEWS: Wallace is leaving Detroit to sign with Chicago, the NBA's defensive player of the year decided on Monday. Wallace will sign a four-year contract worth $60 million when free agents can sign on July 12. The Pistons had offered him a deal worth $50 million over four years, which would have made him the team's second-highest paid player. Instead, Wallace chose to bring his energy and defensive prowess to the Bulls.
NOTES: Last season, the center ranked fourth in the league in rebounding (11.3), ninth in blocks (2.2) and 10th in steals (1.78), the only player in the top 10 in all three categories. The 31-year-old Wallace averaged only 7.3 points last season and shot just 41.6 percent from the free throw line. But what he lacks in offense, he makes up for in defense, as he became the first player to win the NBA's defensive player of the year award four times in a five-year span.
Viktor Khryapa (Small Forward) 6/29/2006
NEWS: Khryapa was traded to Chicago from Portland on Wednesday in a draft-day deal that sent No. 2 overall pick LaMarcus Aldridge of Texas to the Trail Blazers. Khryapa, a 23-year-old small forward, averaged 5.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 69 games for Portland last season.
NOTES: Khryapa has averaged 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds since being chosen 22nd overall by Portland in the 2004 draft.
Jay Williams (Point Guard) 6/2/2006
NEWS: Williams was in Toronto on Thursday working out for the Raptors. The former Chicago Bull crashed his motorcycle into a light pole in June 2003, fracturing his pelvis, tearing knee ligaments and damaging nerves in his left leg. He hasn't played in the NBA since.
NOTES: Jim Kelly, the Raptors' director of player personnel, said while Williams is "very fit," it remains to be seen whether he's ready to return to the NBA. Williams appeared in 75 games, 54 as a starter, from 2002-03. He averaged 9.5 points and 4.7 assists per game.
Chris Duhon (Point Guard) 5/22/2006
NEWS: Duhon is reportedly scheduled to undergo back surgery in the next two weeks to remove scar tissue near a nerve in his lower back. The Chicago Bulls guard expected to need 2-4 weeks of physical therapy after surgery before he can resume playing.
NOTES: Duhon had back problems throughout the second half of the regular season, missing four games and sitting out a number of practices. He averaged 8.7 points and 5.0 assists in 29.1 minutes.
Chris Duhon (Point Guard) 5/16/2006
NEWS: Duhon reportedly will undergo surgery soon to correct problems from a herniated disk in his lower back. The Chicago Bulls guard visited doctor at Duke University last week and was scheduled to receive the final opinion from a Los Angeles-based doctor Wednesday. Should that opinion concur with what Duhon has already been told, he will consult with team medical staff to decide which physician will perform the minor procedure.

Ben Wallace (Center) 5/7/2006
NEWS: Wallace was named the NBA's defensive player of the year on Sunday, winning the award for the fourth time in five seasons. The Detroit center will be presented with the award before Game 2 of the Pistons' conference semifinal series with Cleveland on Tuesday.
NOTES: Wallace averaged 11.3 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.78 steals and was the only player in the top 10 in all three categories. He also became the fifth player in NBA history to have 100 blocks and 100 steals. The 10-year veteran averaged 7.3 points and was named to his fourth straight All-Star team while helping the Pistons to a franchise-record 64 wins.
Andres Nocioni (Small Forward) 4/25/2006
