Dallas Mavericks 2006 News & Notes
Pavel Podkolzin (Center) 8/4/2006
NEWS: Podkolzin was released by the Dallas Mavericks Friday. The 7-foot-5 center from Russia was the Mavericks' 2004 NBA draft first round pick but played just six games in two seasons. Podkolzin missed the first 59 games last season with a broken right foot.
NOTES: Podkolzin, 21, averaged 0.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in six games.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu (Forward) 8/3/2006
NEWS: Mensah-Bonsu signed a contract with the Mavericks on Thursday. The forward was undrafted in the 2006 NBA Draft, making him a free agent.
NOTES: Mensah-Bonsu averaged 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds for George Washington in the 2005-06 season. He averaged around eight points and five rebounds for the Maverick's summer league teams in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
Devean George (Small Forward) 8/1/2006
NEWS: The Mavericks agreed Tuesday to a two-year, $4.2 million contract with George, bolstering their defense with a three-time NBA champion capable of competing for a starting job. George was on the league champs his first three seasons, coming off the bench for Los Angeles Lakers teams led by Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. He's remained a key rotation player in Los Angeles for the last four years.
NOTES: An ankle injury limited him to 15 games two seasons ago, when the Lakers missed the playoffs. He played 71 games last season, averaging 6.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and almost a steal per game in 21.7 minutes. That's slightly more productive than Adrian Griffin was as a starter for Dallas last season.
Jason Terry (Point Guard) 7/25/2006
NEWS: Terry signed his six-year deal with the Mavericks on Tuesday. The 28-year-old Dallas point guard averaged 17.1 points and 3.8 assists this past season. He stepped it up in the playoffs, averaging 18.9 points and 3.8 assists.
NOTES: Terry was the team's second-leading scorer last season and helped fuel Dallas' run to the NBA finals for the first time. The Mavericks said he was their No. 1 offseason priority and proved it, agreeing to a deal worth around $50 million about 12 hours after negotiations could begin July 1. Contracts weren't allowed to be signed until July 12, and Terry had been traveling since then.
Anthony Johnson (Point Guard) 7/23/2006
NEWS: The Pacers sent point guard Anthony Johnson to the Mavericks on Monday for veteran floor leader Darrell Armstrong, Josh Powell and Rawle Marshall. Johnson will make about $2.6 million this season and $2.8 million the following year. The 31-year-old had been a backup for most of his career, but started 89 regular-season games the past two years while the Pacers fought through injuries and suspensions.
NOTES: Johnson averaged 9.2 points and 4.3 assists during the 2005-06 regular season, but boosted those marks to 20.0 points and 5.2 assists in six playoff games. He scored 40 points in his last game as a Pacer, a loss to New Jersey in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Greg Buckner (Shooting Guard) 7/13/2006
NEWS: Buckner signed a three-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. Buckner was a second-round pick by the Mavericks in 1998, spending that first season in the CBA, then arrived in Dallas the next year. He played three seasons for the Mavs, then split the last four between Philadelphia and Denver. Buckner averaged 6.7 points last season for the Nuggets.
NOTES: In seven seasons, Buckner has averaged 5.7 points in 400 games.
Austin Croshere (Power Forward) 7/6/2006
NEWS: Croshere will be traded from Indiana to Dallas for Marquis Daniels, Daniels' agent said Thursday. The trade can't be completed until Wednesday, when the NBA's moratorium ends. The power forward will be a backup to Dirk Nowitzki. His five-year contract ends after this season, providing the Mavericks with salary cap relief next summer.
NOTES: Croshere spent nine years with Indiana, averaging 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Maurice Ager (Guard) 7/2/2006
NEWS: The Mavericks signed Ager on Saturday. Terms of the deal were not released.
NOTES: Ager, a 6-foot-5, 202-pound guard from Michigan State, was the 28th overall pick in this year's draft. He finished his four-year career with the Spartans ranked 11th in scoring with 1,554 points. He averaged 19.3 points per game as a senior.
Jason Terry (Point Guard) 7/1/2006
NEWS: Terry agreed to a six-year deal with the Mavericks on Saturday, less than 12 hours after he became a free agent. The point guard took a hometown discount to stay with Dallas, but salary totals were not released. The 28-year-old averaged 18.9 points in the playoffs as Dallas advanced to the NBA Finals, including two 30-point games against Miami.
NOTES: The deal can't become official until July 12, when the league's moratorium on trades and signings ends.
Jerry Stackhouse (Guard-Forward) 6/21/2006
NEWS: Stackhouse returned from a one-game suspension to score 12 points in Game 6 of the NBA finals on Tuesday, but Dallas fell 95-92 to Miami and lost the series. The Mavericks' forward was suspended for a hard foul on Shaquille O'Neal in Game 4, and was forced to sit out Game 5.
NOTES: Stackhouse averaged 13.7 points off the bench in Dallas' postseason run.
Jason Terry (Point Guard) 6/19/2006
NEWS: Terry had another big game for Dallas, scoring 35 points, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks lost 101-100 in overtime on Sunday to fall behind 3-2 in the NBA Finals. The point guard went 13-for-23 from the field, including 4-for-9 on 3-pointers, but missed a fadeaway jumper at the end of regulation that would have won the game for Dallas.
NOTES: It was Terry's second 30-point game of the finals _ he scored 32 in Game 1 _ and he is averaging 23.2 points in the series.
DJ Mbenga (Center) 6/17/2006
NEWS: Mbenga will return to the lineup in Game 5 of the finals on Sunday after serving a six-game suspension, according to coach Avery Johnson. The Dallas Mavericks center went into the stands to assist Johnson's wife while she and a Phoenix Suns fan argued during a playoff game on May 30.
NOTES: Mbenga scored four points and grabbed five rebounds in five playoff appearances, where he received minimal playing time. He is averaging 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds this season.
Dirk Nowitzki (Power Forward) 6/16/2006
NEWS: Nowitzki had just 16 points on Thursday in the Dallas Maverick's 98-74 loss to the Miami Heat. The Dallas forward was 2-for-14 -- a season low for field goals. He also rolled his ankle in the fourth quarter.
NOTES: Nowitzki is averaging 22.0 points in the series against Miami. He came into the series averaging 28.4 points per game.
Jerry Stackhouse (Guard-Forward) 6/16/2006
NEWS: Stackhouse was suspended Friday from Game 5 of the NBA finals for his hard foul on Shaquille O'Neal in Game 4. The Dallas Mavericks' forward was called for a flagrant foul, but a league review led to an upgrade of the punishment.
NOTES: Stackhouse is a top reserve for Dallas. He is averaging 13.8 points during the postseason and 13.0 points during the finals.
Dirk Nowitzki (Power Forward) 6/2/2006
NEWS: Nowitzki scored 50 points to carry the Mavericks to a 117-101 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night and a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals. He went 14-for-26 from the floor and 17-for-18 from the line.
NOTES: After scoring just 11 points on 3-for-13 shooting and grabbing seven rebounds, Nowitzki scored 15 straight Mavericks points during the fourth quarter and his 50 set a club record for a playoff game and matched Kobe Bryant for the most by anyone this postseason. The 7-foot German is averaging 28.7 points on 50 percent shooting in the playoffs.
DJ Mbenga (Center) 6/2/2006
NEWS: Mbenga was suspended six games for going into the stands on Thursday to help the wife of Mavericks coach Avery Johnson. Mbenga was inactive on Tuesday and in street clothes when Cassandra Johnson was involved in a first-quarter confrontation with fans."It's very difficult to swallow," said Dallas president of basketball operation Donnie Nelson. "My understanding is he went up there with the intention of telling AJ's wife to go back into the locker room."
NOTES: Mbenga has played in just five games during the playoffs. He has a total of four points and five rebounds. This is the second time he's been reprimanded by the league during the playoffs. He was fined $10,000 for going on the court to argue with officials.
Josh Howard (Guard-Forward) 5/25/2006
NEWS: Howard underwent an MRI on Thursday that revealed he suffered a bone bruise in his right ankle during the Mavericks' 121-118 loss to the Phoenix Suns in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday. His status for Game 2 on Friday is unknown. He scored six points in the first six minutes of the game, before leaving with the injury.
NOTES: Howard is scoring 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in 12 playoff games for the Mavericks this season. He closed out the regular season with a career-best 15.6 points and added 6.3 boards in 59 games.
Josh Howard (Guard-Forward) 5/24/2006
NEWS: Howard sprained his ankle midway through the first quarter of a 121-118 loss to Phoenix in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday. The Mavericks' swingman will have an MRI on Thursday to determine his status. Howard scored six points before leaving and is averaging 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds this postseason.
NOTES: Howard averaged a career-best 15.6 points in 59 regular-season games, along with 6.3 rebounds.
Jason Terry (Point Guard) 5/18/2006
NEWS: Terry was scheduled to miss Game 6 against the San Antonio Spurs Friday after being suspended one game by the league Thursday for punching San Antonio's Michael Finley in the closing seconds of Wednesday's Game 5. The Dallas Mavericks guard finished with 15 points and five assists in the 98-97 loss.
NOTES: Terry has averaged 17.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists this season. His play with fellow point guard Devin Harris had been a key reason Dallas had won three straight against San Antonio, pushing the defending NBA champions on the brink of elimination down 3-2.
Dirk Nowitzki (Power Forward) 5/15/2006
NEWS: Nowitzki was expected to play Monday's Game 4 against the San Antonio Spurs despite battling an ankle injury. The Dallas Mavericks forward didn't practice Sunday but said he planned to play Monday's game. "It's pretty stiff," he said. "I rolled it pretty good ... it's nothing I haven't seen before."
NOTES: Nowitzki averaged 26.6 points and 9.0 rebounds in 38.1 minutes during the regular season. He finished with 27 points in Saturday's 104-103 win over the Spurs.
