Wisconsin wide receive Luke Swan out for season

10/8/2007 3:29 PM

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -Wisconsin wide receiver Luke Swan will miss the rest of the season because of a torn hamstring and is scheduled for surgery Wednesday.

The fifth-year senior had two touchdowns this season for the No. 19 Badgers and was averaging 18 yards a catch. He was hurt near the end of Saturday's game against Illinois, landing awkwardly following a 17-yard reception.

Swan's loss is a blow to the Badgers (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) following the team's first defeat of the season against Illinois. Freshman punt returner David Gilreath is expected to replace Swan at wide receiver.

``Luke is a great kid,'' coach Bret Bielema said Monday. ``It was a hard day yesterday. It is tough for everybody.''

In six games this season, Swan had 25 catches for 451 yards and was the Badgers' top receiver. His 170 yards receiving against Washington State was 11th best in school history. Swan joined the team as a walk-on in 2003.
