JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Virginia's Mikell Simpson set an NCAA record Tuesday for the longest touchdown run by a running back in bowl history, a 96-yarder in the Gator Bowl's second quarter.

The Cavaliers were up 9-7 against Texas Tech and starting from their 2. After a 2-yard run, Jameel Sewell took a shotgun snap and handed it to Simpson. He made one cut through a huge hole, then raced down the sideline untouched.

Simpson's run was the second-longest in NCAA bowl history, but longest for a running back. Oregon State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Terry Baker had the longest TD, 99 yards in the 1963 Liberty Bowl against Villanova.

The third-longest play, and previous best for a running back, is famous. Rice's Dicky Maegle went 95 yards and was credited for a touchdown, but was tackled at the 40-yard-line by an Alabama player who came off the bench.

Simpson's run was the longest scoring play in Gator Bowl history, and by far the longest rushing play, beating the previous record of 69 yards by Florida State's Leon Washington in 2005.
