YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) -Brian Brunner threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Brian Anderson to lead Central Michigan to a 24-17 overtime victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
The Chippewas (2-2, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) sealed the win by stopping Dontayo Gage on a quarterback keeper on fourth-and-nine.
It was the third straight overtime game between the rivals. Eastern (0-4, 0-2) won 23-20 last season and 61-58 in four overtime periods in 2004.
Trailing by seven in the closing minutes of regulation, redshirt freshman Andy Schmitt drove the Eagles 70 yards before hitting Jacory Stone on a 3-yard touchdown pass that forced a tie with 13 seconds remaining.
The Chippewas had gone up 17-10 with 1:44 to play when quarterback Brian Brunner scored his second TD on a keeper from 3 yards out. The touchdown capped a 94-yard scoring drive that lasted nearly three minutes and included two third-down conversions.
Brunner, one of three Central Michigan quarterbacks to see action after starter Dan LeFevour left the game with a back injury, also scored on a 39-yard run in the third quarter. Schmitt's 1-yard TD run with 15 seconds left in the quarter put Eastern Michigan up 10-7.
