LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -Chase Holbrook threw two of his three touchdown passes to Chris Williams, one going for 82 yards and other 59, leading New Mexico State to a 29-24 win over Texas-El Paso on Saturday night.

The Aggies (2-1) broke a three-game losing streak in the Interstate 10 rivalry and gave coach Hal Mumme's his first victory over the Miners (1-2) in his three seasons at New Mexico State.

Holbrook finished with 434 yards passing, completing 36 of 48 attempts with one interception.

Williams caught nine passes for 221 yards, and it was the big plays to the 5-foot-8, 157-pound receiver that put New Mexico State ahead early in the fourth quarter and, ultimately, for good.

The Aggies, mistake-prone much of the night, finally got on track in the fourth period when Holbrook threw in the left flat to Williams, who faked a defender and found an open lane for an 82-yard TD play and a 23-17 lead.

UTEP's Fred Rouse returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards, and on the next play Trevor Vittatoe threw a 25-yard strike to diving Jeff Moturi in the right corner of the end zone to put the Miners up 24-23.

Five plays later, Williams beat two defenders and Holbrook found him for a 59-yard TD pass, giving New Mexico State a 29-24 lead with 11:40 to play. The Aggies tried for a 2-point PAT, but Holbrook was stopped at the goal line.

The Miners reached New Mexico State's 43 on their final possession, but Vittatoe's fourth-down pass fell incomplete. The Aggies took over and, after a key first down, ran out the clock.

Mumme raised a towel in jubilation as the final seconds ticked off and students stormed the field in celebration.

It was a nice finish for the Aggies after several frustrating moments. Williams dropped a sure TD pass in the first half, and tight end Nick Cleaver had another TD throw go off his hands.

The ball went the arms of Quintin Demps, who caught it 4 yards into the end zone and ran it all the way back for a UTEP touchdown in the first quarter.

Vitattoe, a redshirt freshman, was 15-of-27 for 261 yards and one TD.
