MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -Tyrell Hayden rushed for a career-high 144 yards and scored a touchdown Thursday night to help Western Kentucky beat Middle Tennessee 20-17.

Trailing 13-10 late in the third quarter, the Blue Raiders (0-4) took the lead when DeMarco McNair scored the second of his two touchdowns on a 4-yard run.

But reserve quarterback K.J. Black threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jake Gaebler on the first play of the fourth quarter to put the Hilltoppers (3-1) back on top for good.

The Blue Raiders had a chance to tie when they got possession with 39 seconds left in the game after forcing a Western Kentucky punt.

Dwight Dasher, starting his first game at quarterback for injured Joe Craddock, led Middle Tennessee on a 49-yard drive to the Western Kentucky 17. But with four seconds remaining, Matt King missed a 34-yard field goal on the final play of the game.

The Hilltoppers, in their first transition season to the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A, rolled up 234 yards on the ground.
