AMHERST, N.Y. (AP)-James Starks ran for 231 yards and three touchdowns as Buffalo defeated Toledo 43-33 Saturday.

The first Buffalo back to top 200 yards rushing in 11 years, Starks' milestone came on a day when Buffalo (3-4, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) and Toledo (2-5, 0-3) combined for 953 yards of total offense. Toledo piled up 513 yards to Buffalo's 435.

A wild 55-point first half saw four scoring plays of 30 yards or more, two blocked extra points, a recovered fumble for a touchdown and a safety. The Bulls led 36-19 at the break.

Toledo's D.J. Lenehan threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns. Lenehan was 32-of-50 passing with one interception.

Jalen Parmele rushed 29 times for 171 yards, and Stephen Williams tied a school record with 15 receptions for 172 yards and two TDs. Chris Hopkins hooked up with Lenehan for a five-yard score with 7:22 left in the third quarter.

Starks gave Buffalo a two-touchdown lead before the game was three minutes old. He took his very first carry for a 45-yard touchdown. His second TD came one play after Toledo punter Brett Kern fumbled on his own 9 yard line.

Early in the fourth quarter, after a 23-point Buffalo lead had been reduced to 10, Starks' third touchdown, covering 36 yards, ended any hope of a Toledo comeback.

Buffalo's Drew Willy was 8-of-16 for 172 yards and three TD passes, two to Ernest Jackson and another to Naaman Roosevelt, who beat Myshan Pettis for a 34-yard catch, then recovered his own fumble in the end zone.
