JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) -Josh Arauco kicked a 31-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to give Arkansas State a 27-24 victory Saturday over Florida International.
Arauco's winning kick was set up by Darren Toney's 60-yard kickoff return after FIU (0-9, 0-4 Sun Belt Conference) scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion to tie it at 24 with 48 seconds left.
FIU has the nation's longest Division I losing streak at 21 games.
Toney also had eight tackles and two interceptions, one he returned 17 yards for a touchdown. That score and Arauco's extra point gave ASU (4-5, 2-3) a 10-9 lead less than a minute into the second half.
The Panthers got a 16-10 lead when Wayne Younger hit Jeremy Dickens on a 4-yard pass with 3:02 left in the third. Chris Abed kicked the extra point.
Arkansas State's Reggie Arnold, who rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries, scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead an Indians comeback. His final score, a 31-yard run with 2:24 left, gave ASU a 24-16 lead.
FIU responded with a 65-yard, eight-play drive that was capped by Greg Ellingson catching a 29-yard scoring pass from Younger with 48 seconds left. On the two-point try, Younger scrambled out of the grasp of three Indians and hit Moses Hinton for the tying extra points.
Arnold started the ASU rally with a 16-yard scoring run with 4:45 left in the final period. Arnold scored his second touchdown with 2:24 left in the game.
FIU finished with 250 yards of offense, while ASU had 381 yards. Younger ran for 53 yards and passed for 110.
Travis Hewitt got his first start of the season for ASU because quarterback Corey Leonard was held out because of an injury. Hewitt, who started four games last season, passed for 174 yards and ran for 24.
The Panthers owned a 9-3 halftime lead even though their offense produced none of the points. Hewitt fumbled in the Indian end zone and fell on the ball for a safety with 10:10 left in the half to give FIU its first points. The Panthers took the lead on L. Singleton's 80-yard punt return with 2:50 left in the half.
The Indians dominated the first quarter, running 16 plays to FIU's three, but barely managed a 3-0 lead. Arauco hit a 26-yard field goal with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.
