Tennessee Titans 2006 News & Notes
Kerry Collins (QB) 8/28/2006
NEWS: Collins signed a contract with the Tennessee Titans Monday, likely to backup Billy Volek and rookie Vince Young. Collins went 7-21 as the starter in Oakland the past two years. He completed 302 passes for 3,759 yards in 2005 and 20 touchdowns, but was sacked 39 times and threw 12 interceptions.
NOTES: Coach Jeff Fisher said Collins will learn the offense while Volek remains a starter, but "Billy's got some competition," Fisher said. "I've spoken with Billy. Billy's not too awfully pleased with it. But that's life in the NFL."
Vince Young (QB) 8/24/2006
NEWS: Young bruised his throwing hand when the backof his throwing hand slammed against a helmet in Wednesday's practice though X-rays are negative. The Tennessee Titans quarterback was examined on the field then walked off and didn't return to practice.
NOTES: Young planned to test his hand in Thursday's practice to see if he could grip and squeeze a ball. The Titans play the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday.
Vince Young (QB) 7/27/2006
NEWS: Young agreed to a five-year deal, with an option for a sixth, with the Titans on Thursday. The third overall draft pick out of Texas is guaranteed $25.7 million and could get as much as $58 million with option and roster bonuses and salary. "It was a great deal for us," said Major Adams, the quarterback's agent.
NOTES: Young completed 61.8 percent of his passes during three seasons at Texas and had 43 career runs of 20 yards or longer, including seven of 51 yards or longer. He totaled 9,167 yards offense, a school record. Young finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting last year and won the Davey O'Brien award as the top quarterback. Young enters training camp behind starter Billy Volek, a six-year veteran.
LenDale White (RB) 7/27/2006
NEWS: White, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound running back, agreed to terms with the Titans on Thursday. The second-round draft pick out of Southern California was hampered with a right hamstring injury that dropped him in the draft, but he has since recovered. White recorded 52 rushing touchdowns during his three college seasons while fumbling just four times in his last 541 carries.
NOTES: White will compete with veterans Chris Brown and Travis Henry in Tennessee's backfield this season. White rushed for 1,302 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior for Southern Cal a year ago. He averaged 6.6 yards per carry and led the nation in scoring with 156 points in 2005.
LenDale White (RB) 6/20/2006
NEWS: White said the hamstring injury that has bothered him since the spring has healed, and he is now working on conditioning. "It feels a lot better getting in there with the team and coming along," said White, who participated in team drills for a second consecutive minicamp practice Tuesday. "It definitely feels good to finally be running the football, instead of rehabbing all day."
NOTES: White, selected by the Titans in the second round of the NFL draft in April, will compete with veterans Chris Brown and Travis Henry in Tennessee's backfield this season. White rushed for 1,302 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior for Southern Cal a year ago.
David Givens (WR) 3/14/2006
NEWS: The Tennessee Titans signed Givens to a five-year deal worth $24 million, including an $8 million signing bonus. Givens and Drew Bennett will become No. 1 receiving options for the Titans.
NOTES: The former Notre Dame star had spent his four-season career with the Patriots. He made a career-high 59 catches for 738 yards and two touchdowns last season.
Kevin Mawae (C) 3/14/2006
NEWS: After an injury-filled season with the Jets, former Pro Bowl center Mawae agreed to join the Tennessee Titans this season.
NOTES:
Kerry Collins (QB) 3/10/2006
NEWS: The Oakland Raiders released Kerry Collins on Friday, ending the quarterback's two-year stint with the team and saving $9.2 million against the salary cap. The decision was delayed five days after the NFL and its union postponed the start of free agency.
NOTES: The 33-year-old Collins went 7-21 as Oakland's starter. The move leaves returning coach Art Shell with Marques Tuiasosopo and Andrew Walter as the leading candidates to start if the team does not acquire a new quarterback. Collins completed 302 of 565 passes for 3,759 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season. He has played previously for the Panthers, Saints and Giants.
Travis Henry (RB) 3/2/2006
NEWS: Henry and the Titans have come to terms on a restructured contract that saves the team from paying a $4 million option the running back was scheduled to get. Instead, he will receive a new multi-year contract.
NOTES: Henry rushed 88 times for 335 yards and a 3.8 rushing average with no touchdowns in 10 games for the Titans in 2005. He has not scored a touchdown since he had 10 for the Buffalo Bills in 2003.
Kyle Vanden Bosch (DE) 2/17/2006
NEWS: Vanden Bosch and the Tennessee Titans reached an agreement on a multiyear deal Thursday, keeping the defensive end off the market. Vanden Bosch earned the veteran's minimum of $540,000 last season, when his worth was in doubt because of torn ACLs in both of his knees. He recorded 100 tackles and 12 1/2 sacks last season, more than doubling his career high of five sacks. The terms of his new contract were not immediately disclosed.
NOTES: Entering his fifth season in the league, Vanden Bosch started his career with Arizona before Tennessee picked him up last season.
