Oakland Raiders 2006 News & Notes
Jeff George (QB) 8/28/2006
NEWS: George signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders on Monday.
NOTES: George has not thrown a pass in the NFL since 2001 with the Washington Redskins. The quarterback has 27,602 yards with a 57.9 completion percentage, 154 touchdowns and 113 interceptions in 134 career games -- 124 starts for the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and Redskins.. The first overall selection in the 1990 NFL draft by the Colts was last on an NFL roster during the 2004 season with the Chicago Bears
Jake Grove (C) 8/24/2006
NEWS: Grove is expected to miss 3-4 weeks after injuring his shoulder on the first play of practice Tuesday and tried to play through it at first, but the pain became too much. The Oakland Raiders center underwent two MRIs and said doctors told him Thursday that the injury was only a muscle strain.
NOTES: Grove will be replaced for now by Corey Hulsey who started last week at left guard and played mostly as an extra tight end and on special teams.
Randy Moss (WR) 8/13/2006
NEWS: Moss is expected to make his return to the Metrodome Monday for the Oakland Raiders preseason game against his former team. The Minnesota Vikings traded the All-Pro wide receiver and 1998 NLF draft pick to Oakland before last season. "It's going to be something special," Moss said of his return. "Hopefully, the Metrodome will sell out because I'm coming back, but I'm a Raider now."
NOTES: Moss has 10,147 yards, 98 touchdown receptions on 634 career catches in seven seasons with Minnesota and one with the Raiders. He finished last season with 1,005 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
Michael Huff (S) 7/26/2006
NEWS: Huff signed a $22.5 million, five-year contract with the Raiders on Tuesday that guarantees the safety $15 million. The seventh overall pick in this year's draft agreed to the parameters of the deal Monday night, but didn't sign it until minutes before Tuesday's afternoon practice on the Raiders' first day of training camp. "He's a very athletic guy, a very smart guy, you can give him a couple of different things and he picks them up very well," coach Art Shell said.
NOTES: Huff played every secondary position at Texas, making 318 tackles in a career that ended with the Longhorns' 41-38 victory over unbeaten USC in the Rose Bowl for the national championship. Huff started every game the past two seasons at strong safety and made a career-high 109 tackles in 2005, including 10 for loss. He caused four fumbles, recovered two and ran one of those back for a touchdown. He also deflected 14 passes.
Robert Gallery (T) 7/25/2006
NEWS: Gallery's move back to left tackle was temporarily put on hold Monday when the Raiders placed the third-year offensive lineman on the physically unable to perform list. Gallery, the No. 2 overall pick in 2004, injured a quad muscle working out last week. Though the injury is not thought to be serious, team trainers and coach Art Shell opted to take a cautious approach.

Lance Johnstone (DE) 4/14/2006
NEWS: Johnstone rejoined Oakland on Thursday, signing a contract with the Raiders after spending the last five seasons with Minnesota. The defensive end led the Vikings with 7 1/2 sacks last season despite playing only 12 games.
NOTES: Johnstone was drafted by the Raiders in 1996 and spent the first five seasons of his career with them. He has 70 sacks in 10 seasons.
Aaron Brooks (QB) 3/23/2006
NEWS: Brooks lands in Oakland. His stay ended in New Orleans when the Saints signed free-agent quarterback Drew Brees. Brooks will likely start for the Raiders, who have released Kerry Collins. Brooks signed a two-year deal worth $8 million, including a $1.5 million bonus, with Oakland.
NOTES: Brooks completed 240 of 431 passes for 2,882 yards with 13 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 13 games with the Saints last season. He was sacked 33 times. He lost his starting position to Todd Bauman because of his inconsistent play.
Rod Smart (RB) 3/1/2006
NEWS: Smart was released by the Panthers in an effort to get the team under the salary cap for the upcoming season. The running back/kick returner's release clears around $700,000 off the salary cap. The five-year veteran joined running back Stephen Davis and defensive tackle Brenston Buckner in getting released by the Panthers.
NOTES: Smart averaged 21.2 yards per return and made three rushes for six yards in 12 games for the Panthers during the 2005 season.
Duane Starks (CB) 2/26/2006
NEWS: The New England Patriots released veteran cornerback Starks on Saturday after just one season with the team. The 31-year-old cornerback spent most of 2005 on injury reserve because of a shoulder injury.
NOTES: In his first seven seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and the Arizona Cardinals, Starks had 25 interceptions. In seven games with the Patriots, however, he had no interceptions.
