St. Louis Rams 2006 News & Notes
Tye Hill (CB) 7/31/2006
NEWS: Hill, the Rams' first-round pick, signed a five-year contract on Sunday night after spending the previous two nights in a hotel near Rams Park as negotiations neared completion.
NOTES: Hill enters a crowded competition at cornerback, a weak spot on a 31st-ranked defense last year that has undergone a major upgrade. Both starters, Jerametruis Butler and Travis Fisher, have recovered from injuries that left them on injured reserve at the end of the season, and the Rams signed free-agent Fakhir Brown, who had four starts last year for the Saints.
Marshall Faulk (RB) 7/21/2006
NEWS: Faulk will have major reconstructive knee surgery and be sidelined for the 2006 season. The 33-year-old running back hasn't participated in the Rams' minicamps this year and had been contemplating retirement before news of his latest surgery. "We were hoping for the best, but we've been planning for both scenarios," said Rams first-year coach Scott Linehan. "I think reality is setting in for sure that potentially his career is winding down."
NOTES: Faulk, the 2000 NFL MVP, had lesser surgery on both knees earlier this year and it was unclear which knee would undergo surgery this time around. Linehan said the team will keep Faulk on the roster. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection is ninth on the career rushing list with 12,279 yards and was the first player in NFL history to gain 2,000 yards from scrimmage in four straight seasons from 1998-2001. He had a career-low 292 yards last season, however, and made one start.
Dave Ragone (QB) 6/21/2006
NEWS: Ragone was acquired by St. Louis from Cincinnati on Wednesday in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. The left-handed quarterback was a third-round draft pick by Houston in 2003 and threw for 135 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in two starts during his rookie season.
NOTES: Ragone will likely compete with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jeff Smoker for the No. 3 quarterback spot.
Marshall Faulk (RB) 6/10/2006
NEWS: Faulk is not attending the Rams' final minicamp this weekend while contemplating retirement because of knees that have been slow to recover from offseason cleanup surgery. St. Louis coach Scott Linehan said Faulk's agent, Rocky Arceneaux, told him again on Thursday that the running back "wasn't physically ready to go."
NOTES: Faulk, the 2000 NFL MVP, is ninth on the career rushing list with 12,279 yards, 34 yards behind Jim Brown. He had a career-low 292 rushing yards last year and made only one start.
Gus Frerotte (QB) 3/18/2006
NEWS: The Rams signed Frerotte to a three-year contract. Frerotte completed 257 of 494 passes for 2,996 yards and 18 touchdowns in 16 games with the Dolphins last season. Frerotte threw 13 interceptions.
NOTES:
Will Witherspoon (LB) 3/12/2006
NEWS: The new-look Rams defense should have at least three different starters this season. The Rams signed former Carolina Panthers linebacker Will Witherspoon, 25, to a six-year deal worth $33 million, including $15 million in guarantees.
NOTES: The Rams had added defensive tackle LaRoi Glover and safety Corey Chavous previously.
Corey Chavous (S) 3/11/2006
NEWS: Chavous reportedly signed a five-year contract with the St. Louis Rams Saturday. The former Minnesota Vikings safety, 30, had spent four years with the franchise, making the Pro Bowl in 2003.
NOTES: Chavous started all 16 games last season, finishing fourth on the team with 90 tackles and two interceptions.
Isaac Bruce (WR) 3/10/2006
NEWS: Bruce is returning to the Rams five days after his release for salary cap reasons. The four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver agreed to a three-year deal worth $15 million, $6 million of which is for the upcoming season. Bruce has played for only the Rams in his 12-year career, the first of which when the team played home games in Los Angeles.
NOTES: Bruce had 36 catches for 525 yards and three touchdowns while appearing in 11 games last season. The three touchdowns tied his second fewest from his rookie season and was his lowest total since scoring once in five games during the 1998 season. Bruce suffered a turf toe injury that forced him to miss five games in 2005.
Isaac Bruce (WR) 3/6/2006
NEWS: Bruce was released by the Rams after the two sides could not agree to a restructured contract. The move saves the Rams $8 million against the salary cap, although they are interested in continuing negotiations.
NOTES: Bruce caught 36 passes for 525 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games for the Rams in 2005. He suffered a turf toe injury that caused him to miss five games.
La'Roi Glover (DT) 3/3/2006
NEWS: Glover, a 10-year veteran who signed with the Cowboys as a free agent in 2002, was cut Thursday. Glover made his sixth Pro Bowl last season, finishing with 26 tackles and three sacks. He has 71 1/2 career sacks, second all-time among defensive tackles behind Warren Sapp's 84 1/2.
NOTES: Glover had a career-high 76 tackles in his first season with Dallas in 2002, two years after he set a New Orleans record with 17 sacks. He had 21 1/2 sacks in four seasons with the Cowboys.
