Miami Dolphins 2006 News & Notes
Dan Wilkinson (DT) 8/14/2006
NEWS: Wilkinson signed with the Miami Dolphins Monday. The veteran defensive tackle missed more than two weeks of training camp before agreeing to a three-year deal with the Dolphins. "I was in no big rush," he said. "I'm refreshed, I'm back and I'm excited."
NOTES: Wilkinson was the No. 1 NFL draft pick in 1994, spending his first four of 12 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals before stints with the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions. He's expected to challenged 36-year-old Keith Traylor for the starting job at Miami.
Daunte Culpepper (QB) 8/10/2006
NEWS: Culpepper received medical clearance to play in Saturday's Miami Dolphins exhibition against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami coach Nick Saban said Thursday. The Dolphins quarterback will be exposed to full contact for the first time since a knee injury ended his 2005 season with the Minnesota Vikings last October.
NOTES: When Culpepper tore three ligaments in his right knee, he was told recovery could take a year or more. The Dolphins acquired him in March, unsure whether he would be available for the start of the regular season on Sept. 7. Culpepper hasn't missed a workout in two weeks of Dolphins training camp.
Seth McKinney (C) 8/10/2006
NEWS: McKinney underwent neck surgery Thursday to repair a disc and is expected to be sidelined 2-3 months. The Miami Dolphins starting guard was sidelined in training camp when he experienced numbness. He had been expected to start after starting 29 games at center the past two seasons.
NOTES: McKinney can begin working out next week and can start lifting weights in six weeks. "He'll definitely be back this season," agent Ralph Cindrich said.
Jason Allen (CB) 8/8/2006
NEWS: Allen signed a six-year contract with the Miami Dolphins on Monday, reportedly between $8 million and $9 million. The 16th overall selection in the 2006 NFL draft will compete for a starting safety job after playing cornerback for Tennessee.
NOTES: Allen had his first day of practice with the Dolphins on Tuesday after signing his contract. He led the Southeastern Conferenec with 123 tackles in 2004 to become the first non-linebacker in at least 35 years to lead that category. He worked out daily during his hold-out to prepare himself for preseason.
Derek Hagan (WR) 7/28/2006
NEWS: Hagan signed a four-year contract with the Dolphins and will be with the team for the first training camp workout Saturday.
NOTES: Hagan is a third-round draft pick from Arizona State.
Ricky Williams (RB) 7/1/2006
NEWS: Williams scored his first CFL touchdown in Toronto's 26-19 loss to British Columbia on Friday night and finished with 97 yards on 18 carries. The running back, suspended from the NFL this season for a fourth positive drug test, was playing in his third CFL regular season game.
NOTES:
Ricky Williams (RB) 6/18/2006
NEWS: Williams rushed for 96 yards on 18 rushes in the Toronto Argonauts' 27-17 season-opening win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League on Saturday.
NOTES: Williams, who is still under contract with the Miami Dolphins, is playing for Toronto while serving a one-season suspension after a fourth positive drug test. The 18-game CFL season lasts until Oct. 28. The Argonauts will visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday.
Bennie Anderson (G) 6/10/2006
NEWS: Anderson was released by the Bills on Friday with two years left on his contract. The Buffalo left guard started 15 games last season and would have made $3.15 million over the remainder of his contract.
NOTES: Buffalo was unhappy with Anderson's play in 2005 and attempted to replace him midway through the season with tackle Mike Williams before Williams sustained a season-ending back injury.
Ricky Williams (RB) 5/28/2006
NEWS: Williams, suspended for the 2006 season by the NFL after a fourth positive drug test, signed a $240,000, one-year contract Sunday with the Toronto Argonauts -- a deal making him the highest-paid running back in the Canadian Football League. The former Heisman Trophy winner missed the Miami Dolphins first four games last season following his third positive test, and lost an appeal over the fourth -- which carries a mandatory one-year ban.
NOTES: Williams is still under contract with the Miami Dolphins. He's expected to begin practicing with his new team Monday. The Argonauts open preseason play this weekend and start their regular season at home on June 17. The 18-game regular season runs through late October.
Ricky Williams (RB) 5/27/2006
NEWS: Leigh Steinberg, Williams' agent, said Saturday his client hasn't yet received permission from the Miami Dolphins to play in the Canadian Football League this season. However, Steinberg expects the Dolphins to allow the former Heisman Trophy winner to suit up for the Argos in 2006. Williams was suspended by the NFL for the entire 2006 season after a fourth positive drug test. He missed Miami's first four games last year following his third positive test.
NOTES: The Dolphins running back ran for 743 yards and six touchdowns in his return to the NFL in 2005 after announcing his retirement in 2004. He's amassed 7,097 career rushing yards and 47 touchdowns in 82 games.
Dan Wilkinson (DT) 5/22/2006
NEWS: The Lions released defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson on Monday. The defensive tackle was the No. 1 pick overall in the 1994 NFL draft, spending the last three seasons in Detroit after five with the Washington Redskins. He spent his first four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.
NOTES: The 6-foot-4, 353-pound Wilkinson did a solid job of occupying offensive linemen, freeing up teammates to make tackles, after being more of a pass-rushing threat earlier in his career. He has 455 career tackles and 54 sacks in 185 career games, including 48 straight starts with the Lions.
Joey Harrington (QB) 5/12/2006
NEWS: Harrington was traded to the Miami Dolphins from the Detroit Lions in exchange for a 2007 conditional sixth-round draft pick.
NOTES: Harrington struggled in three seasons with the Lions after beind selected third overall in the 2002 draft. He completed 188-of-330 passes for 2,021 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 12 games in 2005. He threw 62 touchdowns and 60 interceptions in 58 games for the Lions.
Frank Murphy (WR) 5/8/2006
NEWS: Murphy signed with the Dolphins on Monday after trying out for the team in a rookie minicamp. The wide receiver was out of football in 2005 after missing most of the 2004 season with a ruptured Achilles' tendon while playing for Tampa Bay. He has eight career receptions and 31 kickoff returns, averaging 21.8 yards per return. Murphy also played for Houston in 2002.
NOTES:
Jason Taylor (DE) 5/1/2006
NEWS: Taylor was stabbed in his left forearm in a road-rage incident Sunday in Davie, Fla. The injury was so minor that Taylor did not even wear a bandage while participating in a charity golf event Monday hosted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks. "My wife and I were the victims in an unfortunate incident last night, but we are both fine," Taylor said in a statement issued by the Dolphins.
NOTES: A four-time Pro Bowl selection, the 6-foot-6, 255-pound Miami defensive end-outside linebacker has recorded 540 tackles and 92 1/2 sacks in 140 games in his nine-year career, all with the Dolphins.
Ricky Williams (RB) 4/26/2006
NEWS: Williams' appeal of his latest failed drug test was rejected, the league announced Tuesday, meaning the Miami Dolphins running back will miss the entire 2006 season. "I'm disappointed with the decision, but I respect it," Williams said in a statement released by the team. "I'm proud of my association with the National Football League and look forward to returning to the Dolphins in 2007."
NOTES: Williams ran for 743 yards and six touchdowns in his return to the league in 2005 after announcing his retirement in 2004. For his career, the 28-year-old running back has 7,097 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns in 82 games. Miami will now be on the lookout for a new backup for starter Ronnie Brown, who rushed for 907 yards as a rookie last season.
Ricky Williams (RB) 4/10/2006
NEWS: Williams and his lawyer met Monday with NFL counsel Jeff Pash, seeking to have the league overturn a positive drug test that could cost him the entire 2006 season. The league, which doesn't acknowledge drug tests until there is a final determination, had no comment on the appeal.
NOTES: Williams' status for the upcoming season remains unclear, so stay tuned. If the positive test is upheld, he would receive at least a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy for the fourth time.
Deke Cooper (S) 4/5/2006
NEWS: Cooper signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins on Wednesday after spending the last three seasons with Jacksonville. The free safety started 12 games in 2005, with 80 tackles and one interception. He has 190 tackles and three interceptions during his four-year career.
NOTES:
Damion McIntosh (T) 4/4/2006
NEWS: McIntosh agreed to a one-year deal with the Dolphins on Tuesday, about a month after Miami released him in a cost-cutting move.
NOTES: McIntosh started all 16 games at left tackle for the Dolphins last season, and has started all 30 games in which he's appeared during his two seasons with Miami. He helped the Dolphins allow only 26 sacks last season, the fourth-lowest total in the league.
Fred Beasley (RB) 3/28/2006
NEWS: Beasley signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins on Monday after spending the first eight years of his career with the 49ers, serving as the lead blocker for three different 1,000-yard rushers.
NOTES: He has appeared in 114 regular-season games, including 82 starts. Beasley has rushed for 610 yards and eight touchdowns on 183 carries, and caught 133 passes for 1,017 yards and five touchdowns. A sixth-round draft choice in 1998, Beasley became a full-time starter for the 49ers in 1999. Over the next five seasons, he led the way for Charlie Garner (1999, 2000), Garrison Hearst (2001) and Kevan Barlow (2003) to rush for 1,000 yards.
Yeremiah Bell (S) 3/21/2006
NEWS: Bell re-signed with the Dolphins on Tuesday to a one-year contract. The free safety had 21 tackles and three sacks while playing all 16 games last season. He also had 14 special teams tackles, second on the team.
