New England Patriots 2006 News & Notes
Laurence Maroney (RB) 8/28/2006
NEWS: The Boston Globe reported that Maroney was not at practice for the Patriots on Monday due to undisclosed reasons.
NOTES: The rookie running back rushed for 3,933 yards and 32 touchdowns for Minnesota in 36 games over three college seasons. He was selected by the Patriots in the first round (21st overall) to solidify the running game with starter Corey Dillon.
Deion Branch (WR) 8/25/2006
NEWS: The New England Patroits announced Friday they'll give Branch a week to seek a trade as his holdout entered its 29th day. The Patriots wide receiver and 2005 Super Bowl MVP, can try to find a new team and negotiate a contract with the club until Sept. 1. The Patriots did not disclose whether Branch requested permission.
NOTES: Branch is scheduled to earn $1.045 million this season, the last of his original five-year contract but he wants a deal. He refused to report to the Patriots' mandatory minicamp in June and the team workouts since training began July 28. He's subject to a $14,000 fine for each day he holds out. Branch had a career-high 998 yards on 78 catches and five for touchdowns last season.
Junior Seau (LB) 8/19/2006
NEWS: Seau's retirement lasted four days. The New England Patriots brought Seau out of retirement by signing him to a contract with undisclosed terms. Seau spent the previous three seasons with the Miami Dolphis, making 18 tackles in five games last season.

Mel Mitchell (S) 8/16/2006
NEWS: Mitchell is out for the season with a biceps injury.
NOTES: The Patriots were hoping Mitchell would provide some depth at safety and on special teams. He was the 15th selection in the fifth round for the New Orleans Saints in the 2002 NFL draft. The Western Kentucky product played in 44 games making three tackles for the Saints over three seasons.
Junior Seau (LB) 8/14/2006
NEWS: Seau announced his NFL retirement Monday after 13 seasons with the San Diego Chargers and three more with the Miami Dolphins. The 37-year-old All-Pro linebacker retires with 12 Pro Bowl selections in addition to his 1,317 career tackles, 52 sacks and 15 interceptions in 230 games.
NOTES: Seau was released by the Dolphins in March after missing 17 games because of a season-ending Achilles' tendon injury. He finished each of the past two seasons on injured reserve after joining the Dolphins for the 2003 season.
Junior Seau (LB) 8/13/2006
NEWS: Seau will announce his retirement from pro football Monday. The 12-time Pro Bowl and former Miami Dolphins linebacker who also played with the San Diego Chargers during his 16-year NFL career is expected to make the official announcement at a press conference Monday afternoon at Chargers Park.
NOTES: Seau, 37, was released by the Dolphins in March after missing 17 games with an Achilles' tendon injury. He'd finished each of his last two seasons on injured reserve. Seau spent all but two of his 16 seasons with the Chargers.
Tom Brady (QB) 8/12/2006
NEWS: Brady played for just one series in the New England Patriots' preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday. He completed three straight passes for 24 yards before the Patriots settled for a field goal.
NOTES:
Tedy Bruschi (LB) 8/9/2006
NEWS: Bruschi has a broken wrist and will not play in any preseason games, coach Bill Belichick said early Wednesday through a team spokesman. It was not clear whether Bruschi, 33, will be available for the Patriots' regular-season opener Sept. 10 against the Buffalo Bills.
NOTES: Bruschi's absence is another blow to the Patriots, who suffered three significant free-agent losses: kicker Adam Vinatieri, receiver David Givens and linebacker Willie McGinest. The team is also dealing with a contract holdout by top receiver Deion Branch.
Richard Seymour (DT) 8/3/2006
NEWS: Seymour took the field for his first practice in New England Patriots training camp Thursday after dealing with a tight quadriceps. The Patriots defensive lineman did little physically in a relatively light workout, playing without helmet and shoulder pads. He lined up in his stance and walked through different formations.
NOTES: Seymour had 47 tackles and four sacks in 12 regular season games for New England last season.
Chad Jackson (WR) 7/24/2006
NEWS: The New Patriots signed Jackson on Monday.
NOTES: Jackson, who had 88 receptions for 900 yards and nine touchdowns last season at Florida, could be an immediate contributor after the team lost No. 2 receiver David Givens, who signed with the Titans. He was the team's second-round pick.
Garrett Mills (RB) 7/18/2006
NEWS: The Patriots on Tuesday signed fourth-round draft pick Mills to a four-year deal.
NOTES: The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Mills can play fullback, tight end and halfback. He played 50 games during a four-year career at Tulsa and finished with 201 receptions for 2,389 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Johnathan Sullivan (DT) 6/29/2006
NEWS: Sullivan was arrested in Georgia early Sunday and faces several charges, including possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, seat belt violation, running stop signs and playing loud music. Sullivan and a passenger were pulled over after his vehicle ran two stop signs.
NOTES: The 25-year-old defensive tackle was acquired by New England from New Orleans less than a month ago. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 20, but this arrest surely won't make Patriots coach Bill Belichick and his staff happy.
Johnathan Sullivan (DT) 6/5/2006
NEWS: Sullivan was acquired by the Patriots from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for wide receiver Bethel Johnson on Monday.
NOTES: Sullivan had 20 tackles, nine assists and two pass deflections in 15 games for the Saints in 2005. He has 57 tackles with 21 assists and 1 1-2 sacks with three pass deflections and one forced fumble in 36 games -- 17 starts -- for the Saints, since being drafted as the sixth overall selection in the 2003 NFL draft.
Doug Flutie (QB) 5/15/2006
NEWS: Flutie announced his retirement Monday after 21 years in professional football. The former Heisman Trophy winner, who threw one of the most famous passes in college football history while at Boston College, spent 12 seasons in the NFL and also played in the U.S. Football League and the Canadian Football League.
NOTES: Flutie finishes with 14,715 passing yards and 86 touchdowns in the NFL, spending most of his time as a backup. Last season, he converted the league's first drop kick for an extra point since the 1941 NFL title game. He played for Chicago, New England, Buffalo and San Diego, closing out his career with one final season with the Patriots.
Doug Flutie (QB) 5/1/2006
NEWS: Flutie is expected to announce this week if he will retire or return for his 21st season in pro football. The 43-year-old New England quarterback said he's spoken to many teams, as well as to networks about broadcasting. "I'm just going to take my time to make my decision," Flutie said Monday, and indicated he would not want to play for a team other than the Patriots. "I love being home."
NOTES: Flutie played in five games last season and completed 5-of-10 passes for 29 yards with New England. After winning the Heisman Trophy at Boston College in 1984, he played in the USFL, the Canadian Football League and with Buffalo, Chicago, San Diego and New England in the NFL.
Richard Seymour (DT) 4/13/2006
NEWS: Seymour has signed a new four-year contract, estimated between $7 million and $8 million a year. The Patriots' defensive end is currently in the last of a six-year deal that he signed as a rookie out of Georgia.
NOTES: Seymour had 47 total tackles and four sacks in 12 regular-season games last season.
Martin Gramatica (K) 4/6/2006
NEWS: Gramatica, who was out of football all of last season, was signed by New England Thursday as a potential replacement for the departed Adam Vinatieri.
NOTES: Gramatica's career began in 1999 with Tampa Bay, and he made 28-of-34 field goals in 2000, earning his first trip to the Pro Bowl. But his performance fell off badly in 2004, when he made just 11-of-19 field goals and was cut after 11 games. For his career, he has made 76.5 percent of his career field-goal attempts (137-of-179) and 11-of-12 attempts in the playoffs.
Troy Brown (WR) 3/24/2006
NEWS: The Patriots retained one of their free agents, finalizing a one-year deal with wide receiver Brown on Friday.
NOTES: Brown caught 39 passes for 466 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games with the Patriots last season.
Junior Seau (LB) 3/8/2006
NEWS: Seau was released by the Dolphins in an effort to get under the salary cap. The team will save $2.92 million against the cap with the move.
NOTES: Seau played three seasons with the Dolphins after playing 13 with the San Diego Chargers. He has 1,317 tackles, 52 sacks, 15 interceptions, and 17 fumble recoveries in 230 career games.
Eric Warfield (CB) 3/2/2006
NEWS: Warfield was released by the Chiefs in an effort for the team to get under the salary cap for the upcoming season. He was joined by corner back Dexter McCleon and linebackers Shawn Barber and Gary Stills as the four players released by the Chiefs.
NOTES: Warfield intercepted one pass with one touchdown and recorded 53 tackles for the Chiefs in 2005.
