The New York Jets named Pennington as their starting quarterback on Tuesday. Pennington missed most of last season because of a shoulder injury from 2004. He had rotator cuff surgery and came back in 2005 only to be injured again. It has been 10 months since his last surgery. |
| NOTES: |
Pennington started both preseason games he played in and won the job over Patrick Ramsey, Kellen Clemens and Brooks Bollinger. |

The New York Jets acquired Barlow from the San Francisco 49ers Sunday for an undisclosed draft pick in 2007. The deal is contingent upon Barlow passing a physical. The running back has 3,614 yards and 24 touchdowns in his career. "We've been impressed with Kevan's production in both the running and passing game," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "We feel Kevan will complement our running back group, and he will come in and compete for playing time." |
| NOTES: |
This is the Jets second attempt in a week to shore up the running back position. They traded for Browns running back Lee Suggs on Aug. 14, hoping to get help with veteran Curtis Martin, 33, out. Martin has been on the physically-unable-to-perform list since training camp opened with a lingering knee injury. |

| NEWS: |
The Jets don't expect to have Pennington at quarterback when they visit the Redskins on Saturday for their second preseason game. Pennington left Jets' camp on Thursday to attend to a family illness and has an excused absence. Pennington is expected to miss a few days of practice and return next week. |
| NOTES: |
Pennington's absence affords Patrick Ramsey, acquired by the Jets in an offseason trade with Washington, a chance to start in his return to FedEx Field. Pennington completed 9 of 14 passes for 54 yards without a touchdown or an interception in the Jets' 16-3 loss in the preseason opener on Aug. 11 at Tampa Bay. Pennington likely remains the Jets' No. 1 quarterback for the season. |

| NEWS: |
Pennington was excused from practice Thursday for personal reasons and his status for this weekend's preseason game against Washington is uncertain. Coach Eric Mangini said Pennington left because of a family illness. He wouldn't say whether Pennington would travel to Washington with the team Friday or play against the Redskins on Saturday. |
| NOTES: |
Pennington, coming off a second major shoulder injury, is in a four-way competition for the starting job with Patrick Ramsey, Kellen Clemens and Brooks Bollinger. Though Mangini hasn't announced a starter, Pennington appears to be the favorite to win the job. |

Pennington played in his first game since undergoing a second major operation on his right shoulder in the New York Jets preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The seven-year vet was 9-for-14 for 54 yards. He also fumbled once. |
| NOTES: |
The Jets aren't saying that Pennington is their official starter, but he passed a big test by withstanding the hits in Friday's game. |

Ramey's stay with Washington is reportedly done. ESPN.com is reporting the Redskins traded the 27-year-old quarterback to the Jets in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick on Saturday. |
