Philadelphia Eagles 2006 News & Notes
Jeremy Bloom (WR) 8/29/2006
NEWS: The Philadelphia Eagles placed Bloom on injured reserves Tuesday after he missed most of training camp with an injured hamstring. It's another setback for Bloom, who had his career at Colorado cut short when the NCAA said he wasn't eligible for the team because he accepted endorsements for his skiing career.
NOTES: Bloon returned two kickoffs for 45 yards during the Eagles' preseason.
Donte' Stallworth (WR) 8/28/2006
NEWS: The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Stallworth from the New Orleans Saints on Monday in an attempt to replace Terrell Owens. Stallworth, the 13th overall pick in the 2002 draft, had 70 receptions for 945 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He has 195 catches for 2,791 yards and 23 TDs in 56 games, including 32 starts.
NOTES:
Donte' Stallworth (WR) 8/19/2006
NEWS: The Times-Picayune reported that Stallworth will play for the Saints in Monday's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. The wide receiver sat out the team's preseason opener with a hamstring injury.
NOTES: Stallworth had his best season in the NFL in 2005 with 70 receptions for 945 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games for the Saints.
Brian Westbrook (RB) 8/17/2006
NEWS: The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Westbrook will not play for the Eagles in their next two preseason games due to a sprained left foot. They face the Baltimore Raves on Thursday's and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 25.
NOTES: Westbrook suffered a season-ending Lis Franc injury to his foot last season, causing him to miss the last four games of the season. He had 617 yards rushing on 156 carries and three touchdowns in 2005, with 61 catches and 616 receiving yards and four receptions for scores.
Ryan Moats (RB) 8/7/2006
NEWS: The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Moats is expected to miss another week of practice after spraining his knee ligament two weeks ago.
NOTES: Moats is the team's backup running back. He appeared in seven games last year, one as a starter, where he averaged for 5.1 yards per carry in 55 attempts. He also had four receptions and made three touchdowns.
Brian Dawkins (S) 8/7/2006
NEWS: Dawkins agreed to a two-year extension with the Eagles on Sunday which could keep the safety in Philadelphia through 2008. Terms of the deal were not known.
NOTES: The 32-year-old Dawkins started in 16 games last season. He had 80 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions and four forced fumbles.
Brodrick Bunkley (DT) 8/4/2006
NEWS: Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley agreed to a six-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, ending the first-round pick's two-week holdout. Bunkley, the 14th overall selection in the NFL draft, agreed to a deal worth $13 million, according to an official within the NFL. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because terms weren't publicly disclosed.
NOTES: Bunkley missed 16 days of training camp, and won't play in Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. The Eagles selected Bunkley to fill a glaring need in the middle of a line that hardly generated a strong rush on quarterbacks last season.
Brodrick Bunkley (DT) 8/1/2006
NEWS: Bunkley's plans to have an impact season are decreasing each day the rookie misses practice. Bunkley, the 14th pick in the first round of the NFL draft, still hasn't reached a contract agreement with the Eagles nearly two weeks into training camp. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle already has missed 13 days and almost certainly won't play in Sunday's game against Oakland, even if he signed immediately.
NOTES: The Eagles selected Bunkley to fill a glaring need in the middle of a line that hardly generated a strong rush on quarterbacks last season. At Florida State, Bunkley proved to be a versatile player who can rush the passer and stuff the run. He had nine sacks, 66 tackles and two fumble recoveries as a senior.
Jabar Gaffney (WR) 7/28/2006
NEWS: Gaffney was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a handgun following a traffic stop last month, county prosecutors said Friday. Gaffney had a permit to carry the weapon in Texas, but not in New Jersey, Camden County prosecutors said. The charge carries a maximum five-year sentence but most first-time offenders get no jail time.
NOTES: Gaffney signed as a free agent with the Eagles in the offseason following four seasons with the Houston Texans. Originally a second-round draft pick out of Florida in 2002, Gaffney has 171 career catches for 2,009 yards and seven touchdowns. He signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in March.
Jeremy Bloom (WR) 7/22/2006
NEWS: Bloom has yet to practice with Philadelphia because of a strained hamstring and is listed as day-to-day. The Eagles' wide receiver and former Olympic skier tweaked his hamstring while working out with quarterback Donovan McNabb in Arizona and underwent an MRI Thursday. "He does have a strained hamstring, and we'll take this thing day by day," Eagles coach Andy Reid said Saturday. "It could take a little bit of time."
NOTES: The 5-foot-9, 172-pound Bloom had 24 receptions for an average of 19.1 yards per catch in two seasons at Colorado. The fifth-round draft pick returned 47 punts at 13.5 yards per return and 25 kickoffs at 25.1 yards per return.
Jamaal Jackson (G) 7/20/2006
NEWS: Jackson signed a seven-year contract extension with the Eagles on Thursday. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound offensive lineman started the final eight games last season at center, replacing the injured Hank Fraley. Jackson spent the entire 2004 season on injured reserve with an arm injury and was on the 2003 practice squad after signing as a free agent out of Delaware State.
NOTES:
Winston Justice (T) 7/17/2006
NEWS: Justice, a second-round draft pick from USC, signed a four-year contract with the Eagles on Monday.
NOTES: Justice started 36 games at USC, earning All-Pac 10 honorable mention honors as a senior and sophomore. The 21-year-old tackle could possibly start on the offensive line this season.
Jeremy Bloom (WR) 7/13/2006
NEWS: Bloom signed a four-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. The 5-foot-9, 172-pound wide receiver had 24 receptions for an average of 19.1 yards per catch in two seasons at Colorado. The fifth-round draft pick returned 47 punts at 13.5 yards per return and 25 kickoffs at 25.1 yards per return.
NOTES: Bloom is a two-time Olympic skier whose football career was put on hold by an NCAA ruling that said he wasn't eligible for the football team because he accepted endorsements to keep his skiing career on track.
Chris Gocong (LB) 7/13/2006
NEWS: Gocong, a third-round draft pick, signed a four-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. The 6-foot-2, 264-pound defensive end/linebacker had 212 tackles, 42 sacks and one interception during his college career at Cal Poly. He won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in Division 1-AA last season. Gocong set a 1-AA season record with 23 1/2 sacks and forced four fumbles.
NOTES:
Max Jean-Gilles (G) 7/10/2006
NEWS: Jean-Gilles, a fourth-round pick in the 2006 draft, signed a four-year contract with the Eagles on Monday. The 6-foot-4, 356-pound guard earned All-American honors as a senior last season at Georgia.
NOTES:
Max Jean-Gilles (G) 7/10/2006
NEWS: Jean-Gilles, a fourth-round pick in the 2006 draft, signed a four-year contract with the Eagles on Monday. The 6-foot-4, 356-pound guard earned All-America honors as a senior last season at Georgia.
NOTES:
Omar Gaither (LB) 6/16/2006
NEWS: The Philadelphia Eagles signed Gaither to a four-year contract Friday. The former University of Tennessee linebacker is the first of the Eagles' draft picks to sign.
NOTES: Gaither was a two-time All-SEC second team selection while at Tennessee, amassing 210 tackles, six sacks and forcing five fumbles in 49 career games.
Shawn Andrews (G) 6/12/2006
NEWS: Andrews signed a seven-year contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. After breaking his leg in the first game of his rookie season, the right guard started 16 games last year.
NOTES:
Paul Grasmanis (DT) 5/23/2006
NEWS: The Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle retired on Tuesday, ending a 10-year NFL career filled with injuries. Grasmanis joined the Eagles in 2000, and made 126 tackles and 10 1/2 sacks in 54 games in Philadelphia. He played just eight games over the last three seasons, missing most of 2003 and 2005 with a torn Achilles' tendon.
NOTES: Grasmanis spent his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears after being selected in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL draft. After he was released by Chicago, Grasmanis spent one week with the St. Louis Rams and finished the 1999 season with the Denver Broncos.
Dirk Johnson (P) 4/27/2006
NEWS: Johnson, a restricted free agent, signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia on Thursday. The 30-year-old punter played in seven games for the Eagles last season before being placed on injured reserve for a sports hernia. Johnson, who played in all 32 games for Philadelphia in 2003 and 2004, averaged 38.4 yards per punt last season.
