San Francisco 49ers 2006 News & Notes
Jerry Rice (WR) 8/20/2006
NEWS: Rice will retire as a member of the San Francisco 49ers this week. The 13-time Pro Bowl wide receiver holds NFL records with 1,4549 receptions for 22,895 yards and 197 touchdowns. He also leads the league with single-season receiving records of 1,848 yards and 22 touchdowns. He played four seasons with the Oakland Raiders after San Francisco released him following the 2000 season.
NOTES: The deal for Rice's retirement with the 49ers was informally announced last month. He'd also played 13 games with the Seattle Seahawks in 2004 and tried out for the Denver Broncos before retiring last Sept. 3. "Having Jerry retire as a member of the 49ers is extremely important to Denise and me," owner John York said. "It's equally important to our fans and every former 49ers player that has ever worn the uniform."
Alex Smith (QB) 8/12/2006
NEWS: Smith was 16-for-21 for 137 yards in the San Francisco 49ers' preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Friday. The quarterback made nine appearances last season, seven as a starter of one of the league's worst offenses last year.
NOTES: "He's a grown man," San Francisco coach Frank Gore said. "Alex wants it. That's what I respect about him. He wants to be great."
Antonio Bryant (WR) 8/12/2006
NEWS: Bryant had five receptions for 54 yards in his debut with the San Francisco 49ers in a preseason game on Friday.
NOTES: This is Bryant's third team in five seasons. He made 68 catches for 1,009 yards and four touchdowns for the Cleveland Browns last year.
Michael Robinson (RB) 7/25/2006
NEWS: Robinson, the former Penn State quarterback hoping to make the NFL as a running back, signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday.
NOTES: Robinson, the 49ers' fourth-round draft pick, was a quarterback, receiver, halfback and punt returner during four years with the Nittany Lions. The Big Ten's offensive player of the year last season will start training camp Friday as a running back, but could play several positions for the 49ers.
Tom Rouen (P) 6/30/2006
NEWS: San Francisco signed Rouen on Thursday, 10 days after he was released by Seattle. The 38-year-old punter averaged 41.6 yards on 61 punts for the Seahawks last season and 50.2 yeards per punt in their 21-10 defeat to Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.
NOTES: Rouen, a 14-year veteran, spent nine-plus seasons with Denver and has also played for the New York Giants and Pittsburgh. He has averaged 43.4 yards per punt in 188 career games.
Tom Rouen (P) 6/19/2006
NEWS: Rouen's brief stint with Seattle ended on Monday when the Seahawks released him. The 13-year veteran punter was signed in Week 5 to replace Leo Araguz and punted in 12 regular season games and the entire playoffs for the Seahawks. He averaged 41.6 yards on 62 regular-season kicks and had a 50.2 yard average in Seattle's 21-10 loss to Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.
NOTES: The 38-year-old Rouen also played with Seattle in 2003 and 2004, and has spent time with the New York Giants, Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Trent Dilfer (QB) 5/5/2006
NEWS: San Francisco acquired Dilfer on Thursday in a trade that sent Ken Dorsey and a 2007 seventh-round draft pick to Cleveland. Dilfer, who is recovering from offseason knee surgery, will back up starting quarterback Alex Smith. Dilfer went 4-7 with the Browns last season before losing his starting job to rookie Charlie Frye. He completed 59.8 percent of his passes in 2005 for 2,321 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
NOTES: Dilfer has also spent time with Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Seattle, winning a Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2001. He has started 107 career games with a 55.7 completion percentage and a 71.3 passer rating.
Chad Williams (S) 5/4/2006
NEWS: Williams signed with San Francisco on Wednesday after spending the last four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. The safety played under current 49ers coach Mike Nolan when he was the defensive coordinator in Baltimore. Williams appeared in 64 games with the Ravens, making 158 tackles, eight interceptions and 5 1/2 sacks.
NOTES:
T.J. Slaughter (LB) 4/17/2006
NEWS: Slaughter was signed by the 49ers on Monday, his fifth NFL team in five seasons. The 29-year-old linebacker recorded nine tackles in 10 games with the Saints last season. Slaughter played three-plus seasons with the Jaguars after they selected him in the third round of the 2000 draft. He also has spent time with the Packers and Ravens.
NOTES:
Sammy Davis (CB) 4/13/2006
NEWS: The Chargers traded Davis to the 49ers for wide receiver Rashaun Woods on Wednesday. Davis, the 30th overall pick in the 2003 draft, started just four games at cornerback last season recording 26 total tackles and one sack. His best season was 2003 when he started every game and tallied 58 tackles and two interceptions.
NOTES:
Tom Rouen (P) 4/12/2006
NEWS: Rouen was re-signed by the Seahawks on Tuesday. The 13-year veteran punter signed with Seattle in Week 5 last season to replace Leo Araguz. He punted 61 times over the final 12 regular-season games with an average of 41.6 yards and had 20 punts downed inside opponents' 20-yard line. Rouen also has played with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.
NOTES:
Terry Jones (TE) 3/28/2006
NEWS: Jones re-signed Tuesday with the San Francisco 49ers, who claimed him off waivers from Baltimore last season.
NOTES: Jones caught nine passes for 76 yards for the 49ers last season after being dropped by the Ravens, who drafted him in 2002. He started 29 games over three NFL seasons with Baltimore. Jones started five of his seven games with the 49ers, who scrambled for replacements after losing starting tight end Eric Johnson before the season with a torn muscle in his left foot.
Larry Allen (G) 3/21/2006
NEWS: The Cowboys released Allen on Tuesday, meaning the 12-year veteran is likely finished with Dallas. The guard, one of the most dominant in NFL history, was due a $2 million roster bonus on April 1, but the Cowboys chose to cut him instead.
NOTES: Dallas could still re-sign Allen, whose play has declined in recent years, but he is now a free agent and can sign with whatever team he chooses.
Antonio Bryant (WR) 3/13/2006
NEWS: Bryant is joining his third team in five career seasons after signing a four-year deal worth $15 million that will include $5 million in bonuses. The 49ers just dealt Brandon Lloyd to the Redskins for two draft picks, so Bryant could have a significant impact.
NOTES: Bryant made 68 catches for 1,009 yards and four touchdowns for the Cleveland Browns. How he connects with second-year quarterback Alex Smith will be key for the 49ers.
Joe Nedney (K) 3/11/2006
NEWS: Nedney re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers for four more years Saturday. The 49ers kicker completed 26-of-28 field-goal attempts and all 19 extra points last season.
NOTES: Nedney, who turns 33 this month, has kicked for six NFL teams.
Trent Dilfer (QB) 2/7/2006
NEWS: Dilfer had surgery on his right knee on Tuesday to repair a partial tear of a patella tendon. The Browns' quarterback was bothered with knee problems during the season, which caused him to miss the final five games.
NOTES: In 11 regular season games, Dilfer completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 2,321 yards and 11 touchdowns.
