Jacksonville Jaguars 2006 News & Notes
Greg Jones (RB) 8/28/2006
NEWS: Jones is out for the season for the Jaguars with a torn ACL in his left knee. It is the second time the running back has torn the ligament, suffering the injury at Florida State in 2002. He suffered the current injury when he was hit low by Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Blue Adams in Saturday's preseason game.
NOTES: Jones was expected to be the Jaguars short-yardage running back this season, after rushing for 575 yards and four touchdowns on 151 carries in 2005.
Marcus Stroud (DT) 8/9/2006
NEWS: Stroud's home was burglarized and among the missing items were $20,000 in cash, two semiautomatic handguns and several pieces of jewelry, the Duval County Sheriff's Office said. Stroud declined comment, but police said he told them he returned home after practice Monday afternoon to find a crowbar on his kitchen floor near a rear door and his house ransacked.
NOTES: Stroud was a first-round draft pick in 2001 from Georgia who has started the last three Pro Bowls for the AFC.
Fred Taylor (RB) 7/29/2006
NEWS: Jaguars running back Fred Taylor began training camp Saturday the same way he did last year _ nursing an injury. Taylor strained his right hamstring during a conditioning drill Thursday and was less than full speed when Jacksonville opened camp. It was hardly the start Taylor wanted, especially after spending all of last season recovering from a serious knee injury.
NOTES: Taylor tore two ligaments in his left knee Dec. 19, 2004, missed the final two games of that season and hobbled through much of last year. He wore a knee brace in every game and practice, and never returned to full speed. He also sat out five games with an ankle injury. He finished with 787 yards on 194 carries, averaging 4.1 yards per run _ the second lowest in his eight-year career.
Jimmy Smith (WR) 5/11/2006
NEWS: Smith announced his retirement on Thursday. The last original member of the Jaguars ends his 12-year NFL career, which started in 1992 as a second round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys. He joined the expansion Jaguars in 1995 and finishes his career as one of the top wide receivers in NFL history with 862 catches (seventh all-time), 12,187 yards (11th) and 67 touchdowns (31st). He helped the team to two appearances in the Conference Championship games in 1997 and 2000.
NOTES:
John Henderson (DT) 3/21/2006
NEWS: Henderson signed a six-year contract extension with the Jaguars on Tuesday, allowing Jacksonville to keep one of its defensive cornerstones. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
NOTES: Henderson made the Pro Bowl in 2004 and his play is important to the interior of the Jaguars' defense. He had three sacks and 70 tackles last season, the most by any AFC defensive tackle.
Brian Williams (CB) 3/11/2006
NEWS: Williams signed a contract Saturday with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The fifth-year cornerback played the last four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
NOTES: Williams played 14 games last season, starting nine. He had four interceptions, 46 tackles, 11 passes defensed and nine special teams tackles.
Brian Williams (CB) 2/23/2006
NEWS: The Minnesota Vikings tagged Williams their transition player. The Vikings' cornerback had 36 solo tackles, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries in 2005.
NOTES: Under league rules, Williams can sign an offer sheet with another team but the Vikings will have one week to match the offer.
