Baltimore Ravens 2006 News & Notes
Jamal Lewis (RB) 8/20/2006
NEWS: Lewis will sit out the next two weeks because of a nagging hip injury. The Baltimore Ravens running back has been bothered by a strained left hip flexor. He began training camp on the physically-unable-to-peform list after injuring himself running sprints in late July, but played the first two preseason games.
NOTES: Lewis has 6,669 career rushing yards and 36 touchdowns. He finished the 2005 season with 906 rushing yards on 269 carries in his lowest single-season tally. He finished 2004 with 1,006 rushing yards and running for a career-best 2,066 in 2003 and 14 touchdowns.
Ray Lewis (LB) 8/19/2006
NEWS: Lewis forced a fumble on his lone tackle on Thursday in a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It was Lewis' first on-field action since he went down with a hamstring injury in Week 6 last season.
NOTES: Lewis made a career-low 38 tackles with a sack and an interception in six games last season.
Derrick Mason (WR) 8/12/2006
NEWS: Mason left the Baltimore Ravens' preseason game against the New York Giants on Friday after suffering a mild concussion. He had completed on series.
NOTES:
Ray Lewis (LB) 8/12/2006
NEWS: Lewis did not play in the Baltimore Ravens' preseason game against the New York Giants on Friday.
NOTES: Lewis's season was cut short last season after sustaining a tear in his right hamstring. He finished last season with 46 tackles, one interception and one sack in six games.
Steve McNair (QB) 8/12/2006
NEWS: McNair led the Baltimore Ravens to a touchdown in his first series in a preseason game on Friday against the New York Giants. McNair was 4-for-5 for 45 yards and ran in the 6-yard touchdown. It was his only drive in the game. The Ravens quarterback was traded from the Tennessee Titans in the offseason.
NOTES:
Haloti Ngata (DT) 7/28/2006
NEWS: The Ravens and top draft pick Haloti Ngata agreed on a five-year deal late Friday, ending the defensive tackle's one-day holdout. Ngata, the 12th overall selection in the 2006 NFL draft, is expected to report to training camp Saturday. He missed both practices Friday, the first day of camp.
NOTES: The 350-pound Ngata is expected to vie for a starting spot on the Ravens' line. He was the Pac-10 co-defensive player of the year last season at Oregon, where he finished with 151 career tackles, 10 sacks and a school-record seven blocked kicks.
Chris Chester (C) 7/21/2006
NEWS: Chester agreed to a four-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday. The 6-foot-3, 302-pound offensive lineman was a second-round pick out of Oklahoma in this year's draft. Chester, a converted tight end, is expected to compete for a starting spot at center or right guard.
NOTES:
David Pittman (CB) 7/21/2006
NEWS: Pittman agreed to a three-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday. The 5-foot-11, 182-pound cornerback out of Northwestern State was a third-round pick in this year's draft.
NOTES:
Roderick Green (LB) 7/10/2006
NEWS: Green was in good condition Monday after being stabbed at a bowling alley over the weekend. A hospital spokeswoman said the Ravens' linebacker was taken to Sinai Hospital after the stabbing early Sunday morning. The incident occurred when Green bumped into another bowler, leading to an altercation, which Green tried to get away from. He left the bowling alley, but the man stabbed him in the parking lot.
NOTES: Green registered two sacks in 16 games for Baltimore last season and has appeared in 25 games over the last two seasons.
Ed Reed (S) 6/27/2006
NEWS: Reed was signed to a six-year contract extension by the Ravens on Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
NOTES: A Pro Bowl selection in 2003 and 2004, the 27-year-old Baltimore safety has scored seven touchdowns in four seasons and has a franchise-record 22 interceptions. He was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004 when he led the league with nine interceptions and set a new league record with 358 interception return yards. Reed missed six games in 2005 with a high ankle sprain and finished with 37 tackles and one interception.
Gerome Sapp (S) 6/19/2006
NEWS: The Ravens acquired Sapp on Monday from Indianapolis in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2007. The safety was originally drafted by Baltimore out of Notre Dame in 2003 and was picked up by the Colts off waivers in September 2004. He has 74 tackles in 43 career games.
NOTES:
Steve McNair (QB) 6/7/2006
NEWS: McNair was traded to the Baltimore Ravens from the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. The trade caps a difficult end to the quarterback's tenure with the Titans. He was barred from the team's practice facility since April 3, before an arbitrator ruled in favor of him to return.
NOTES: McNair has thrown for 27,141 yards with a 59.5 completion percentage, 156 touchdowns with 103 interceptions for an 83.3 rating in 11 seasons with the Titans. He led them to Super Bowl XXXIV, where they lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He is expected to become the starter for the Raves, as Kyle Boller backs him up.
Steve McNair (QB) 6/1/2006
NEWS: An arbitrator ruled on Wednesday that McNair should be allowed to work out at the Titans' practice facility, something the team barred him from doing since April 3. Tennesse feared McNair would suffer an injury and they would have to absorb a $23.46 million salary cap hit.
NOTES: The All-Pro quarterback is still expected to be released by the Titans, even though they said they would welcome McNair back into the offseason program. Tennessee needs the salary cap relief and also drafted Vince Young with the third pick overall.
Steve McNair (QB) 5/1/2006
NEWS: McNair's agent, Bus Cook, said Sunday the Titans were considering releasing the veteran quarterback or trading him to the Baltimore Ravens, with something possibly worked out by Monday. The Titans drafted Texas quarterback Vince Young with the No. 3 overall pick Saturday as McNair's successor, and they already were looking for a way to reduce or shed the $23.46 million salary cap number the 2003 co-MVP is scheduled to count for in 2006.
NOTES: Titans general manager Floyd Reese said the Ravens indeed had discussed a trade with Tennessee, but Baltimore's offer was insufficient and the talks ended. Stay tuned, because it looks more and more like McNair's days with the Titans are numbered.
Leo Araguz (P) 4/13/2006
NEWS: Araguz was signed to a one-year contract by the Ravens on Thursday. The veteran punter will replace Dave Zastudil, who signed with the Browns during the opening week of free agency. Araguz played in four games for the Seahawks last season, with a punting average of 40.2 yards. He entered the NFL in 1996 and spent his first four seasons with the Raiders and has also played for the Lions and Vikings.
NOTES: Araguz has played in 60 career games with a punting average of 42.6 yards.
Jamal Lewis (RB) 3/13/2006
NEWS: Lewis is returning to Baltimore. He signed a three-year deal worth almost $25 million, but the second and third years are costly options of $10 million per season. Lewis will earn $6 million with a $1 million base for this season.
NOTES: The former Tennessee running back has spent his entire five-season career with Baltimore, rushing for 906 yards and three touchdowns on 269 carries in 15 games last year. He also caught 32 passes for 191 yards and a score. Lewis ran for 2,066 yards in 2003. The Ravens just lost running back Chester Taylor to the Vikings and picked up Mike Anderson from Denver.
Steve McNair (QB) 3/2/2006
NEWS: McNair will be paid a $1 million fee that will keep him with the Tennessee Titans for the 2006 season. The Titans will not have to pay a $50 million option that would have extended McNair's contract through 2009.
NOTES: McNair threw for 3,161 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a quarterback rating of 82.4 in 14 games for the Titans in 2005.
Mike Anderson (RB) 3/2/2006
NEWS: Anderson was released by the Broncos in an effort for the team to get under the salary cap for the upcoming season. He was joined by tight end Jeb Putzier and Trevor Pryce as the three players released by the Broncos.
NOTES: Anderson rushed 239 times for 1,014 yards and 12 touchdowns in 15 games for the Broncos in 2005. The sixth-round selection in the 2000 NFL Draft by the Broncos holds the franchise rookie-record of 1,487 yards and 15 touchdowns, set in 2000.
Trevor Pryce (DE) 3/2/2006
NEWS: Pryce was released by the Broncos in an effort for the team to get under the salary cap for the upcoming season. His release saves the Broncos around $8.5 million for the 2006 season. He was joined by running back Mike Anderson and tight end Jeb Putzier as the three players released by the Broncos.
NOTES: Pryce recorded 31 tackles with 4.0 sacks and one forced fumble in 16 games for the Broncos in 2005. He spent his all of his nine years in the NFL with the Broncos and has 64.0 sacks with two interceptions.
Gary Stills (DE) 3/2/2006
NEWS: Stills was released by the Chiefs in an effort for the team to get under the salary cap for the upcoming season. He was joined by linebacker Shawn Barber and corner backs Dexter McCleon and Eric Warfield as the four players released by the Chiefs.
NOTES: Stills recovered one fumble in 16 games for the Chiefs in 2005. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2003 as a special teams player for the Chiefs.
