Cincinnati Bengals 2006 News & Notes
Hannibal Navies (LB) 8/29/2006
NEWS: The Cincinnati Bengals released Navies on Tuesday. The eight-year vet was signed as a free agent last season and played in 15 games, including one start.
NOTES:
Carson Palmer (QB) 8/29/2006
NEWS: Palmer completed 9-of-14 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns for the Bengals in a 48-17 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers on Monday. It was his first game since tearing two ligaments and dislocating his knee cap during the Bengals' 31-17 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 8. He sat out the first two preseason games, feeling he wasn't ready. His knee still gets some swelling.
NOTES: Palmer has been declared the Bengals starting quarterback for the season after his performance on Monday. He had a breakout season in 2005, throwing for 3,836 yards with 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 67.8 percent of his passes.
Carson Palmer (QB) 8/25/2006
NEWS: Palmer is expected to play in the Cincinnati Bengals Monday night game against the Green Bay Packers. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Friday he was unsure how much he'd play Palmer in the quarterback's first game back from reconstructive knee surgery. Palmer decided he's ready to get back on the field for the second to last preseason game. He hasn't been tackled during practice, one of the final tests for his rebuilt left knee.
NOTES: Palmer tore two ligaments and dislocated his knee cap during Cincinnati's 31-17 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 8. He sat out the first two preseason games, feeling he wasn't ready. His knee still gets some swelling. How the knee holds up Monday will go a long way in determining whether he'll be available for the season opener.
Carson Palmer (QB) 8/21/2006
NEWS: Palmer said late Sunday he expects to play in the Cincinnati Bengals preseason game next Monday against the Green Bay Packers, provided he doesn't have any swelling this week in his surgically rebuilt knee. "I'm preparing to play," he said. "I'm practicing to play. That's been part of the plan, part of the schedule. I'll see how I feel later in the week, but right now I'm expecting to play."
NOTES: Palmer emerged as one of the top NFL quarterbacks last season, throwing for 3,836 yards and 32 touchdowns. He tore his ACL and dislocated his knee cap ont he first play of a 31-17 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 8.
Carson Palmer (QB) 8/20/2006
NEWS: Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis declined to say Sunday whether Carson Palmer will play in Cincinnati's next preseason game, leaving the quarterback's status unclear for the season opener. Last week, the Bengals quarterback said he wasn't ready to get into a game and take his first hit. "He wants to make sure he can perform his job the way he knows how to perform it when he steps out onto the field," Lewis said.
NOTES: The game against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 28 is important for Palmer who had reconstructive knee surgery seven months ago. Lewis has maintained that Palmer needs to play the last two preseason games to be ready for the season opener.
Carson Palmer (QB) 8/17/2006
NEWS: The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Palmer will not play for the Bengals in their preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Friday. The quarterback has stated that he will not appear in a game until he is 100% recovered from his left knee surger. He tore his ACL and dislocated his knee cap on the first play of a 31-17 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 8.
NOTES: Palmer emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL last season, throwing for 3,836 yards with a 67.8 completion percentage, 32 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions for a 101.1 passer rating. Anthony Wright will start in place of him on Friday.
Carson Palmer (QB) 8/12/2006
NEWS: Palmer feels he will be ready by the Cincinnati Bengals' third preseason game.
NOTES: Palmer needed reconstructive surgery after tearing his ACL and dislocating his knee cap in a Jan. 28 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Eric Steinbach (G) 8/8/2006
NEWS: Steinbach pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to a charge of boating under the influence on the Ohio River. The guard failed a series of field sobriety tests and was released from the Campbell County jail after posting a $500 bond. He becomes the fifth member of the Cincinnati Bengals in three months accused of breaking the law.
NOTES:
Odell Thurman (LB) 7/26/2006
NEWS: Thurman has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policies. Thurman became the team's starting middle linebacker as a rookie last season, when the Bengals made their first playoff appearance since 1990. Thurman was excused from the team's minicamp last month for personal reasons.
NOTES: Thurman, 23, a second-round pick from Georgia in 2005, had 1.5 sacks, five interceptions and led the team in tackles in nine games.
Levi Jones (T) 7/26/2006
NEWS: The Bengals offered Jones a six-year, $40 million contract extension Tuesday. The deal will pay Jones $21 million over the first three years and includes $16.3 million in guaranteed money.
NOTES: Jones, 26, was part of a line that protected Carson Palmer by allowing 21 sacks, a team record low, and helped Rudi Johnson rush for a club-record 1,458 yards last season. He's been the starter at left tackle since the fifth game of 2002, his rookie year, and had started 59 straight games before sitting out the 2005 regular-season finale with a sore shoulder.
Matthias Askew (DT) 7/23/2006
NEWS: Officers trying to arrest Askew after a parking violation used a Taser to subdue him and charged him with resisting arrest. The 24-year-old Askew struggled with officers trying to handcuff him Saturday evening and broke away before he was shocked, police spokesman Lt. Tom Lanter said. Askew ignored an officer's warning to move his illegally parked car and then refused to give his identification, Lanter said.
NOTES: Askew, also charged with obstructing official business, was released on his own recognizance and was scheduled to appear in court Monday, a jail official said. The 6-foot-5, 302-pound lineman was a fourth-round draft pick in 2004 from Michigan State. He played in five games as a rookie, but was active for only one game last season.
Ahmad Brooks (LB) 7/13/2006
NEWS: The Bengals selected Brooks in the third round of Thursday's supplemental NFL draft. Brooks starred at Virginia for three seasons, but played only six games last season due to injury and was kicked off the team just before spring practice. He was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference linebacker as a sophomore and a finalist for the Butkus Award given to the nation's top linebacker in 2004.
NOTES:
Carson Palmer (QB) 6/16/2006
NEWS: Palmer was cleared to throw to receivers during 7-on-7 drills on Thursday. The drill has defensive backs cover receivers, but no one rushes the passer. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback also briefly ran the offense at the end of practice. "Now we've got a couple of months," Palmer said. "I wish we had a couple of more months for me personally. But when you look at the flip side, if I am ready to play that day, that game can't come quickly enough."
NOTES: Palmer is trying to return from a Jan. 10 reconstructive surgery on his knee. He tore his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. Trainer Paul Sparling said the torn tissue around the kneecap -- which dislocated during the tackle -- has healed and is no longer a concern.
Chad Johnson (WR) 6/16/2006
NEWS: Johnson pulled groin muscles during Friday's Cincinnati Bengals minicamp and was taken off the field on a cart. The Bengals' wide receiver was battling safety Kevin Kaesviharn for a pass when he got hurt. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he didn't think th injury was severe. The Bengals' minicamp ends Saturday with training camp to open on July 29.
NOTES: Johnson finished the 2005 regular season with nine touchdown receptions and 1,432 yards receiving.
Anthony Wright (QB) 4/21/2006
NEWS: Wright inked a one-year deal with Cincinnati on Thursday and will provide quarterbacking depth for the Bengals while starter Carson Palmer recovers from reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Wright played in nine games and started seven for Baltimore in 2005, setting career highs with 164 completions, 266 attempts and 1,582 passing yards.
NOTES: The eight-year veteran will compete with Craig Krenzel and Doug Johnson to be Palmer's backup.
Chad Johnson (WR) 4/20/2006
NEWS: Johnson got a two-year extension Thursday as part of a reworked contract that increases his pay to an average of $10.75 million per year in bonuses and salary. The Bengals' wide receiver could remain with the team until 2011 under the new deal. Johnson led the AFC with a career-high 97 catches last season and set a club record with 1,432 yards.
NOTES: In 76 career games, Johnson has 379 receptions for 5,556 yards and 34 touchdowns.
Jeremi Johnson (RB) 4/13/2006
NEWS: Johnson, a restricted free agent, was re-signed by the Bengals to a six-year deal on Thursday. The Cincinnati starting fullback caught 12 passes for 65 yards and three touchdowns last season and had eight carries for 14 rushing yards. Johnson has been used primarily as a blocker for running back Rudi Johnson.
NOTES: Johnson wanted to remain in Cincinnati long-term and the new deal keeps him in a Bengals' uniform through 2011.
Chris Henry (WR) 4/12/2006
NEWS: Henry is scheduled to stand trial on May 30 on charges of carrying a concealed firearm. The 22-year-old Bengals wide receiver was arrested in January after a police officer allegedly saw him pull a pistol on a group of people. He was also arrested on counts of improper exhibition of a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm, but only charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
NOTES: Henry had 31 catches for 422 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie in 2005.
Bobbie Williams (G) 4/7/2006
NEWS: Williams got a three-year contract extension Friday keeping him with the Bengals through 2009. The Cincinnati guard joined the team as an unrestricted free agent before the 2004 season and has started ever game for the past two seasons, missing just one play. Williams spent his first three seasons with Philadelphia.
NOTES: Williams was part of an offensive line that set a franchise record by only allowing 21 sacks last season.
Sam Adams (DT) 4/3/2006
NEWS: Adams agreed to a three-year contract with Cincinnati on Monday. The 6-foot-4, 335-pound defensive tackle spent the last three seasons with Buffalo. He battled an ankle injury in 2005, recording just 15 tackles and three sacks.
NOTES: A three-time Pro Bowler, Adams has also played for Baltimore, Oakland and Seattle during his 12-year career.
