Cleveland Browns 2006 News & Notes
Braylon Edwards (WR) 8/26/2006
NEWS: Edwards is expected to appear in a few series against Cleveland on Saturday. It will be his first game appearance since tearing a ligament in his right knee in December.
NOTES: Edwards had 32 receptions for 512 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games as a rookie last season.
Therrian Fontenot (CB) 8/22/2006
NEWS: The Cleveland Browns acquired Fontenot from the Green Bay Packers Tuesday in exchange for wide receiver Carlton Brewster to give their injury-riddled secondary some depth. Fontenot, an undrafted rookie free agent cornerback last season, appeared in one game on special teams and spent the rest of the year on the Packers practice squad.
NOTES: The Browns needed to add a defensive back because of injuries to cornerbacks Gary Baxter and Daylon McCutcheon who both may not be ready for the season opener on Sept. 10.
Lee Suggs (RB) 8/15/2006
NEWS: Suggs failed a physical with the New York Jets on Tuesday after being traded by the Cleveland Browns for cornerback Derrick Strait on Monday. "We have a whole series of tests that we do, and we were very thorough with the process," Jets coach Eric Mangini said. "He just didn't pass those tests. ... Each team has a criteria they set up that they believe is what's important and what's needed to be competitive. I'm very comfortable with the tests we have set up."
NOTES: Suggs returns to the Browns, where he rushed for 1,048 yards with four touchdowns in 25 games over three seasons. The running back was limited to eight games in 2005 due to ankle and thumb injuries
Lee Suggs (RB) 8/14/2006
NEWS: The New York Jets acquired Suggs Monday in a trade with the Cleveland Browns for defensive back Derrick Strait. Suggs is coming off three injury plagued seasons with the Browns who selected him in the 2003 NFL draft. Shoulder, neck, toe, ankle and thumb injuries had sidelined him for several games in each of his first three pro seasons. He had 1,048 career rushing yards and four touchdowns in 25 games with the Browns.
NOTES: The Jets are preparing for the possibility of life without star running back Curtis Martin, the NFL's fourth-leading career rusher. Suggs only played eight games with Cleveland last season. The 2004 season proved his best in a Browns jersey, rushing for 744 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games before he was sidelined by a neck injury.
Bob Hallen (C) 8/11/2006
NEWS: Hallen, who was being counted on by the Cleveland Browns to replace the injured LeCharles Bentley at center, informed the club Friday that he has retired. Hallen, who left the team earlier this week, sent a letter to the Browns saying he was done with pro football. He did not give a reason for his decision.
NOTES: The 31-year-old Hallen, who played the previous four seasons with San Diego, left camp unexcused on Monday, citing back problems. Coach Romeo Crennel said Hallen had "a back issue" and was dealing with "personal problems."
Braylon Edwards (WR) 7/30/2006
NEWS: Edwards, who underwent knee surgery in January and wasn't expected to be ready to play in games until October, unexpectedly returned to practice for the first time with the Browns on Saturday. Edwards tore the anterior cruciate ligament while trying to make a leaping catch against Jacksonville on Dec. 4, ending his rookie season and requiring him to undergo surgery on Jan. 3.
NOTES: Edwards thinks he might even be able to play in the Browns' season opener on Sept. 10 against New Orleans. The Browns initially targeted Sept. 1 as Edwards return date for practice. However, The 6-foot-3, 212-pounder who was taken with the No. 3 overall selection in the 2005 draft, is way ahead of the club's medical timetable
LeCharles Bentley (C) 7/27/2006
NEWS: Bentley suffered a season-ending injury to his left knee on Thursday and will undergo surgery as early as Friday. The Browns two-time Pro Bowl center tore his patellar tendon on the first 11-on-11 drill of training camp Thursday. "He was the face of our free-agent class," Cleveland general manager Phil Savage said. "We feel terrible for LeCharles, but life goes on."
NOTES: Bentley started 57 games for the Saints over the last four seasons before signing a six-year, $36 million deal with the Browns in March that included $12.5 million in guaranteed money.
Kamerion Wimbley (DE) 7/22/2006
NEWS: Wimbley, the 13th overall draft pick, signed a six-year, $23.7 million deal with the Cleveland Browns on Saturday. Wimbley's agent Joe Linta said the deal includes $9.3 million in guaranteed money and is a 9.5 percent increase over what the 13th pick received last year. "It shows the fans and the team I'm ready to be a Brown," Wimbley said.
NOTES: The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Wimbley recorded 7.5 sacks during his senior season as a defensive end for the Seminoles. He will switch to outside linebacker for Cleveland, however, and be the first top pick to open training camp on time with the team since Courtney Brown in 2000.
DeMario Minter (CB) 7/19/2006
NEWS: The Browns signed Minter to a four-year contract Wednesday.
NOTES: Minter, a fifth-round pick in 2006, played in 49 games, including 26 starts, at Georgia and had two career interceptions and 23 deflections.

NOTES: Oshinowo, a sixth-round pick in 2006, started 34 games at Stanford and finished with 143 tackles, 15 sacks and two forced fumbles.
Kellen Winslow (TE) 6/16/2006
NEWS: Winslow returned to the football field for the first time in almost two years Friday. The Cleveland Browns tight end had been out since a May 1, 2005 motorcycle accident ended his 2005 pro season before it began. The 2004 first round NFL Draft pick also missed most of his rookie season after breaking his right leg that September, requiring two surgeries.
NOTES: Winslow participated in all drills Friday at Browns' minicamp and looked fluid running routes and moving laterally. He did wear a black sleeve wrapped around his right knee and estimated he's about 90 percent physically.
Ken Dorsey (QB) 5/5/2006
NEWS: Cleveland acquired Dorsey on Thursday along with a 2007 seventh-round draft pick in a trade that sent Trent Dilfer to San Francisco. Dorsey started 10 games over the last two seasons for the 49ers, including three in 2005. The 25-year-old quarterback has completed 54.1 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions during his career.
NOTES:

NEWS: The Browns signed Fraser to a one-year contract on Wednesday. The defensive lineman appeared in all 16 games last season for the Browns, mostly on special teams. He had one tackle as a backup defensive end. The 23-year-old signed with Cleveland last year after going undrafted out of Ohio State.
NOTES:
Willie McGinest (LB) 3/15/2006
NEWS: McGinest signed a three-year contract worth $12 million with the Cleveland Browns, which reunites him with head coach Romeo Crennel. The 12-year veteran won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, where Crennel spent four years as the defensive coordinator. The 34-year-old linebacker gives the Browns a pass rush presence that they lacked in 2005.
NOTES: McGinest spent 12 years with the Patriots and was a key defensive part of their three Super Bowl championship teams. He recorded 78.0 sacks with four interceptions, 15 fumble recoveries and two touchdowns in 171 games. He is the NFL's postseason sack leader with 16.
Joe Jurevicius (WR) 3/12/2006

NOTES: Jurevicius caught 55 passes for 694 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns in his only season with Seattle last year. He figures to become the No. 2 wide receiver behind Braylon Edwards.
Willie McGinest (LB) 3/9/2006
NEWS: McGinest was released by the Patriots in a salary cap move that saves the team more than $7 million for next season.
NOTES: McGinest spent 12 years with the Patriots and was a key defensive part of their three Super Bowl championship teams. He recorded 78.0 sacks with four interceptions, 15 fumble recoveries and two touchdowns in 171 games.
Jeff Chandler (K) 3/7/2006
NEWS: Chander, a kicker, reportedly signed a one-year contract Tuesday with the Cleveland Browns.
NOTES: Chandler has played in 13 career NFL games for the San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins. He's also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins.
Reuben Droughns (RB) 3/3/2006
NEWS: Droughns, who last season became the first Cleveland back to go over 1,000 yards since 1985, signed a three-year contract extension Friday. The 27-year-old lobbied the Browns for a long-term deal and general manager Phil Savage said he earned it with his performance last season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
NOTES: Droughns rushed for 1,232 yards last year and broke Jim Brown's record for carries in a season (309) while starting all 16 games, finally giving the Browns some consistency at the position. Droughns came out of nowhere for Denver in 2004, rushing for 1,240 yards when injuries thrust him into the starting role after years of being used as a fullback.
