Dallas Cowboys 2006 News & Notes
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/27/2006
NEWS: Owens has finally pushed the Dallas Cowboys too far, drawing a $9,500 fine for missing a team meeting and a rehabilitation session and being late to an offensive meeting, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.
NOTES: The incidents occurred Friday, the team's final day preparing for a preseason game against San Francisco. The Cowboys beat the 49ers 17-7, making them 3-0 this preseason without Owens playing any of the games because of a hamstring injury that's also kept him out of 19 of 31 practices since the start of training camp.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/23/2006
NEWS: Owens reportedly reaggravated his left hamstring injury when he returned to practice last week with the Dallas Cowboys and almost certainly will miss his third straight preseason game. The All-Pro wide receiver missed 14 straight training camp practices and the preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks because of a hamstring problem that's bothered him all month. Owens returned for five practices last week but didn't play Monday's game against the New Orleans Saints.
NOTES: Owens first felt a twinge in his hamstring on Aug. 2, but an MRI exam taken three days later was clear. Owens said another MRI taken this week was also negative, with only a little fluid in the hamstring. He signed a three-year, $25 million deal with the Cowboys in March after two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Drew Henson (QB) 8/23/2006
NEWS: Henson won't be on the Dallas Cowboys roster this season, and the former third baseman once considered the team's quarterback on the future may be on the trading block. Henson had spent three seasons playing baseball with the New York Yankees organization when Dallas acquired him from the Houston Texans in March 2003.
NOTES: The Cowboys gave Henson an eight-year deal with a guaranteed $3.5 million three years ago. The final four years of his contract were voidable. About $3 milion of Henson's contract will count against the Cowboys' salary cap this season.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/22/2006
NEWS: Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said late Monday that Owens may have another MRI exam taken to see why his injured hamstring continues to bother him after weeks of treatment. The hamstring has bothered the All-Pro wide receiver since the first week of Cowboys training camp. He missed the first preseason game game, then returned to practice last week but not enough for coach Bill Parcells to clear him to play against the New Orleans Saints.
NOTES: Owens signed a three-year, $25 million contract with Dallas in March after two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He has 716 career receptions for 10,535 yards and 101 touchdowns in 142 games with the San Francisco 49ers and Eagles.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/19/2006
NEWS: Owens will not play for the Cowboys in Monday's preseason game against the New Orleans Saints due to a hamstring injury. "He's gotten some pretty good work in this week, and I just don't want to start over next week," Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said. "Hopefully, he'll get his first real game action next weekend."
NOTES: Owens signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the Cowboys in March after spending two tumultuous seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 10-year veteran has 716 receptions for 10,535 yards and 101 touchdowns in 142 career games for the San Francisco 49ers (1996-2003) and Eagles (2004-05).
Terry Glenn (WR) 8/17/2006
NEWS: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Glenn returned to Cowboys practice on Thursday after being hampered by blisters on his feet. This was the Cowboys first practice session with both of their expected starting wide receivers, as Glenn and Terrell Owens (hamstring) have been slowed by injury.
NOTES: Glenn caught 62 passes for 1,136 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns in 16 games for the Cowboys last season. It was his first season 1,000-yard receiving season since 1999, when he had a career-best 1,147 yards for the New England Patriots.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/16/2006
NEWS: Owens returned to practice for the Cowboys on Wednesday after missing 14 consecutive sessions with a hamstring injury. His status is uncertain for the Cowboys' preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Monday.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/10/2006
NEWS: Owens was on the training bike for an 11th straight practice Thursday. The was a chance after a hard practice Wednesday that the Dallas Cowboys receiver might've rejoined teammates on the field but he opted not to push it. There's only a walkthrough Friday, then a preseason opener Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks which Owens will miss.
NOTES: With Sunday's off day, Monday is the soonest Owens would return. The All-Pro receiver has amassed 10,535 career yards on 716 receptions.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/9/2006
NEWS: Owens caught passes Wednesday, but did so during a post-practice session with a fourth-string quarterback, not with the rest of the Dallas Cowboys starters. The morning practice was the ninth straight that Owens has missed.
NOTES: An MRI taken Saturday showed no damage, but he's concerned enough to have flown in his own doctors, trainers and an oxygen chamber that speeds recovery. He's also said the injury likely will keep him out of the preseason opener Saturday night in Seattle.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/7/2006
NEWS: Owens said on Monday that his hamstring injury will likely keep him out of the Cowboys' preseason opener Saturday. Although an MRI showed no damage, Owens is having his healing-inducing hyperbaric chamber shipped to his training camp hotel room. Two doctors are also expected to help him.
NOTES: Owens had missed five straight practices after joining the team for the first five practices. He missed the final nine games last season with the Philadelphia Eagles after the team suspended him.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/6/2006
NEWS: An MRI exam Saturday showed no damage to Owens' left hamstring but the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver still missed a third straight day of full practice. Owens sat out the morning walk-through and also missed the intrasquad scrimmage later Saturday. "It's sore to the point that I feel like if I get on the field now and try to open up, it's just going to make matters worse," Owens said of the hamstring injury.
NOTES: Owens missed the final nine games of last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. He practiced five days with the Cowboys before complaining of hamstring soreness on Aug. 2.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/5/2006
NEWS: Owens missed a walk-through Saturday morning to have an MRI exam on his sore left hamstring. The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver was to be held out of the afternoon scrimmage. It was the third straight he hasn't caught passes from quarterback Drew Bledsoe.
NOTES:
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/4/2006
NEWS: Owens missed his second straight Dallas Cowboys practice Friday because of soreness in his left hamstring. The Pro Bowl wide receiver has amassed 10,535 yards on 716 receptions entering his first season of play with the Cowboys.
NOTES: Owens has never had a hamstring problem before and is hoping the time off now will prevent this ache from turning into something serious. Owens declined to be interviewed Friday morning, saying only, "Day to day" as he left the field.
Terrell Owens (WR) 8/3/2006
NEWS: Owens did not practice with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday because of a sore left hamstring. The Pro Bowl wide receiver spent most of his time slowly riding an exercise bicycle. He stopped pedaling to do a situp drill and another with a medicine ball. In between, he spent several minutes talking to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. The injury doesn't seem to be serious.
NOTES: Owens has amassed 10,535 yards on 716 receptions in 142 career games.
Roy Williams (S) 8/2/2006
NEWS: The Cowboys signed Williams to a four-year contract extension Wednesday, securing the hard-hitting run-stopper through the 2010 season. Financial terms weren't immediately available. He had a year left on his contract and would have become an unrestricted free agent after this season, but the new five-year deal replaces the 2006 year and adds four more.
NOTES: Williams, who turns 26 this month, had 81 tackles, three interceptions, 2½ sacks and a touchdown last season.
Marcus Spears (DE) 7/30/2006
NEWS: Spears tore cartilage in his right knee in the first workout of training camp Saturday and will have arthroscopic surgery Sunday that will keep him out up to three weeks.
NOTES: Spears, a first-round pick before last season, had the start of his career slowed by injuries to the same knee, right ankle and right calf during his first training camp. He still managed to break into the starting lineup midway the season, and is expected to hold down the left end of Dallas' 3-4 front again this season.
Bobby Carpenter (LB) 7/29/2006
NEWS: The Cowboys agreed to a five-year, $12 million deal with first-round pick Bobby Carpenter on Friday and were expecting to have it signed in time for the first workout Saturday.
NOTES: Carpenter, a linebacker from Ohio State taken 18th overall, will receive about $7.5 million guaranteed. The only holdup was finalizing some wording. He's already in camp.
Jason Witten (TE) 7/23/2006
NEWS: Witten agreed to a seven year, $29 million contract with the Cowboys on Saturday. The deal includes a $6 million signing bonus, a guaranteed $6 million option bonus next March on top of a $500,000 base salary this season, team officials said.
NOTES: Witten, 24, caught 87 passes for 980 yards and six touchdowns in 2004. Last year, he had 66 catches for 757 yards and six touchdowns. Overall, the Dallas tight end has 188 catches for 2,084 yards and 13 touchdowns in 47 career games.
Keith Davis (S) 7/16/2006
NEWS: Davis was shot twice while driving on a Dallas highway early Sunday and was hospitalized in stable condition after undergoing surgery to remove bullet fragments. His agent, Curtis Stephens, said the injuries were minor and that Davis expected to be released late Sunday or Monday.
NOTES: The 27-year-old Davis is among the Cowboys' top special teams players and the incumbent starting safety opposite Roy Williams. Earlier this summer, Dallas gave him a roughly $3 million, two-year contract that includes about $2 million in bonus and salary this season. The deal came after New Orleans signed Davis to an offer sheet.
Marcus Coleman (S) 4/19/2006
NEWS: Coleman signed a one-year deal with Dallas on Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Coleman, a perennial starter who had been with Houston since its inception, was released by the Texans on Feb. 28.
NOTES: The 10-year veteran started 11 games last season at free safety for Houston. The former Texas Tech player was a fifth-round draft pick by the New York Jets in 1996 and spent six years with the club, including three seasons under Cowboys coach Bill Parcells. Coleman went to the Texans in the 2002 expansion draft. Coleman has 516 tackles and 25 interceptions in his career.
