Green Bay Packers 2006 News & Notes
William Henderson (RB) 8/22/2006
NEWS: Henderson had arthroscopic knee surgery late Monday and will be out three weeks, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. The Packers running back injured his knee in last Saturday's preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. McCarthy said he hoped Henderson, who has missed only two games in his 11-year Packers career, will be back in time for the Sept. 10 season opener against the Chicago Bears.
NOTES: Henderson, 35, has spent his entire NFL career with Green Bay. he has 426 career rushing yards and 2,347 career receiving yards with 19 career touchdowns.
B.J. Sander (P) 8/21/2006
NEWS: The Green Bay Packers released Sander on Monday, bringing to an end a career that came to symbolize the disappointment associated with former coach Mike Sherman's brief stint as team general manager. The Packers punter won the Ray Guy Award as the nation's top college punter while at Ohio State, but has failed to live up to high expectations since Sherman and the Packers traded up to take him in the third round of the 2004 NFL draft.
NOTES: Green Bay signed CFL standout Jon Ryan in the offseason to compete with Sander in training camp. Sander's release makes Ryan the favorite to win the punting job.
Ahman Green (RB) 8/7/2006
NEWS: Green participated in individual drills for the first time during training camp, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The Packers running back is trying to recover from a torn quadriceps injury that kept him out for most of last season.
NOTES: The team is hoping to have him back for the third exhibition game.
Johnny Jolly (DT) 7/8/2006
NEWS: The Packers signed Jolly to a contract on Friday. A sixth-round pick out of Texas A&M, the defensive tackle earned All-Big 12 honors as a junior and a senior.
NOTES:
Najeh Davenport (RB) 6/18/2006
NEWS: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Davenport will not participate in practice with the Packers until training camp begins in July. The running back is coming off surgery on his broken right ankle, which he injured on Oct. 9 in a 52-3 win over the New Orleans Saints.
NOTES: Davenport is expected to compete for the starting running back position with Ahman Green. He rushed for 105 yards on 30 carries with two touchdowns in five games for the Packers in 2005.
Brett Favre (QB) 5/9/2006
NEWS: Favre has committed to playing for the Green Bay Packers in 2006, and it's possible the commitment may go beyond the upcoming season. The quarterback is backing off earlier comments that the 2006 season would be last. "I know I said that," Favre said Saturday, in his first public comments since telling the Packers he would return for another year. "But I hope you guys will respect me. I'm going to play this year, give it my best and not talk about it."
NOTES:
Charles Woodson (CB) 5/2/2006
NEWS: Woodson signed a multiyear deal with the Green Bay Packers on Monday. Though terms of the deal weren't announced, Woodson's agent, Kevin Poston, said last Wednesday that the Packers agreed to a seven-year deal for $52.7 million, including $10.5 million in the first year. The 29-year-old cornerback spent his first eight seasons with Oakland, registering 456 tackles and 17 interceptions.
NOTES:
Terrence Murphy (WR) 4/21/2006
NEWS: The Packers released Murphy on Friday after telling the wide receiver earlier in the week that they intended to fail him on his physical. Murphy, a second round pick in 2005, suffered a bruised spinal cord on a helmet-to-helmt hit by Carolina's Thomas Davis in a game on Oct. 3. He played in three games as a rookie, catching five passes for 36 yards and returning five kickoffs for 91 yards.
NOTES:
Brett Favre (QB) 4/8/2006
NEWS: Favre still has not decided if he will return to the Packers next season. Favre held a press conference Saturday morning, but insisted that he had still not made up his mind.
NOTES: The 36-year-old Favre is the NFL's only three-time MVP (1995-97), and in 225 career games he has thrown for 53,615 yards and 396 touchdowns and 255 interceptions.
Billy Cundiff (K) 3/28/2006
NEWS: Cundiff signed with the Packers on Monday after being waived by the Buccaneers.
NOTES: Cundiff spent four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, making 60 of 82 field-goal attempts. He made a career-long 56-yarder last season, but was limited to six games because of injuries and signed with Tampa Bay after the season. The Buccaneers waived him when they re-signed Matt Bryant.
Najeh Davenport (RB) 3/26/2006
NEWS: Davenport has agreed in principle to re-sign with the Packers, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.
NOTES: Davenport ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries in five games last season, which was shortened because of a broken right ankle.
Aaron Kampman (DE) 3/11/2006
NEWS: Kampman signed a contract extension with the Green Bay Packers Saturday, though the terms of the multiyear deal were not disclosed. The defensive end is the second potential unrestricted free agent the Packers have signed to an extension this week. Packers all-time leading rusher Ahman Green re-signed Monday.
NOTES: Kampman had 105 tackles and a career-high 6.5 sacks last season. Among NFL defensive linemen, only one other player had more tackles.
Ahman Green (RB) 3/6/2006
NEWS: Green signed a one-year contract to return to the Packers, reportedly for at least $3 million.
NOTES: Green returns to the Packers after playing only five games in 2005, due to a torn left thigh tendon suffered in a 23-20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 23. He had 77 rushes for 255 yards and no touchdowns.
Ahmad Carroll (CB) 2/19/2006
NEWS: Carroll ran afoul of the law Friday when he was arrested for allegedly arguing with a police officer. The Packers' 22-year-old cornerback was charged with third-degree assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and refusal to submit to arrest in Fayetteville, Ark.
NOTES: While the charges are punishable by up to a year in jail, they are misdemeanors and it seems unlikely that Carroll's football will be affected. Carroll started all but one game for the Packers last season, recording 40 tackles and two interceptions.
Billy Cundiff (K) 2/17/2006
NEWS: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Cundiff on Friday. The former Dallas Cowboy kicker has made 60-of-82 career field-goal attempts in his three-year career.
NOTES: Last season, Cundiff made 5-of-8 field-goal attempts and all 14 extra points in six games. He made a team-record 56-yard field goal against the Detroit Lions.
