DETROIT (AP) - The Colorado Avalanche pulled Jose Theodore and sent him to the team hotel, saying he was sick.

Theodore gave up four goals on 16 shots against the Detroit Red Wings before getting replaced by Peter Budaj early in the second period Thursday night in Game 1 of the second-round series.

``Jose was sick last night,'' Avs coach Joel Quenneville said after losing 4-3 to Detroit. ``Normally, he skates the morning of a game. But he rested all day and he wanted to play. He's not feeling great right.

``But hopefully, it's a short spell and he'll be fine.''

Game 2 is Saturday afternoon in Detroit.

Tyler Weiman became the Avs' substitute goalie when Theodore left the game and arena.
