New York Islanders 2005 News & Notes
Sean Hill (Defense) 8/15/2006
NEWS: The New York Islanders signed Hill to a one-year deal worth $600,000 Tuesday. Hill spent last season with the Florida Panthers after a three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. He had two goals and 18 assists in 78 games with the Panthers last season.
NOTES: Hill joins a revamped Islanders defense that also added Brendan Witt and Tom Poti earlier in the free agent signing period. The Islanders now boast a veteran defense that will be anchored by Alexei Zhitnik and youngsters Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais.
Arron Asham (Right Wing) 7/25/2006
NEWS: Asham avoided salary arbitration Monday and agreed to a one-year deal with the Islanders. Asham, scheduled for a salary arbitration hearing this week, will earn $950,000 next season -- a $323,000 raise over a year ago.
NOTES: The 28-year-old Asham had nine goals and 15 assists in 63 games last season, his third with the Islanders and seventh in the NHL. The veteran forward, who missed the final 18 games in 2005-06 due to a sprained ankle, has 47 goals and 55 assists in 341 career games with the Montreal Canadiens and New York.
Mike York (Left Wing) 7/22/2006
NEWS: York was awarded an $800,000 raise Saturday in salary arbitration, the first setback in the tenure of new Islanders general manager Garth Snow. York, acquired before last season from the Edmonton Oilers for former New York captain Michael Peca, avoided arbitration a year ago when he signed a $2.05 million contract.
NOTES: York had 13 goals and 39 assists in 75 games with the Islanders, but turned that into a $2.85 million award following Thursday's arbitration hearing.
Wade Dubielewicz (Goaltender) 7/19/2006
NEWS: Dubielewicz agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Islanders on Wednesday. The 27-year-old goaltender is 3-3-0 with a 2.60 goals-against average in nine career NHL games.
Garth Snow (Goaltender) 7/18/2006
NEWS: Snow retired after 12 NHL seasons, the last four with the New York Islanders, and took over as the team's general manager on Tuesday. Snow went 4-13-1 as the Islanders' backup goaltender last season and will now be in charge of making trades and will oversee the pro scouting department. "This is a proud moment for me, a dream come true," Snow said. "It's an opportunity I wanted more than anything."
NOTES: Snow was 135-147-43-1 with a 2.80 goals-against average and .901 save percentage in 368 career NHL games. He will take over for Neil Smith, who was fired after less than a month as the Islanders' general manager.
Chris Simon (Left Wing) 7/11/2006
NEWS: Simon signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the New York Islanders on Tuesday. The left wing had eight goals and 14 assists in 72 games for Calgary last season. He has 133 goals, 142 assists and 1,690 penalty minutes in 677 career games with Colorado, Washington, Chicago, the New York Rangers and Calgary.
Tom Poti (Defense) 7/8/2006
NEWS: Poti signed a one-year deal with the Islanders on Saturday, joining New York's other team after spending three years with the Rangers. The 29-year-old defenseman had three goals and 20 assists in 73 games for the Rangers last season and led the team with 123 blocked shots. He should provide a stabilizing presence on the blue line for the Islanders.
Joel Bouchard (Defense) 7/6/2006
NEWS: The New York Islanders re-signed Bouchard to a one-year, $500,000 deal on Wednesday. The veteran defenseman had one goal and eight assists in 25 games for the Islanders last season after being called up from the AHL.

NEWS: Witt agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the New York Islanders on Monday. The 31-year-old defenseman spent most of his first 10 seasons with Washington before being sent to Nashville before the March trade deadline. Witt recorded one goal and 13 assists in 75 total games during the 2005-06 season. "We were looking for competitors, and today we signed one of the fiercest in the league in Brendan Witt," Islanders general manager Neil Smith said.
NOTES: Witt has 20 goals, 66 assists and 1,103 penalty minutes in 643 career games.
Mike Sillinger (Right Wing) 7/2/2006
NEWS: Sillinger signed a three-year, $6.6 million deal with the New York Islanders on Sunday, leaving the Predators after less than one season. The 35-year-old winger will earn $2.1 million next season, $2.2 million in 2007-08 and $2.3 million in 2008-09. "Mike Sillinger is one of the most respected players in the game -- strong in all zones and at faceoffs, an excellent skater and a leader," new Islanders general manager Neil Smith said.
NOTES: Sillinger had 32 goals and 31 assists in 79 games last season with the St. Louis Blues and Predators, who acquired him in a trade on Jan. 29. He was part of a salary purge with the Blues, who significantly cut payroll in an effort to facilitate the sale of the team. Sillinger has 198 goals and 461 points in 908 career games.
Brendan Witt (Defense) 4/5/2006
NEWS: Witt will miss Wednesday's game in Chicago after being suspended for one game by the NHL on Tuesday. The Predators' defenseman was suspended for a collision with Columbus' David Vyborny in the first period of a 3-1 loss on Monday, which left the forward with a knee injury.
