Chicago Blackhawks 2005 News & Notes
Jim Vandermeer (Defense) 8/2/2006
NEWS: The Blackhawks re-signed Vandermeer to a one-year contract.
NOTES: Vandermeer set career highs in games played (76), goals (six), power play goals (two), assists (18), points (24) and penalty minutes (116) for the Blackhawks last season.
Jonathan Toews (Center) 8/2/2006
NEWS: Toews, the No. 3 pick in the NHL draft, will return to the University of North Dakota for his sophomore season instead of joining the Blackhawks. Toews turned down a $935,000 offer from Chicago. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound center from Winnipeg, Manitoba, said money had nothing to do with his decision to come back to North Dakota, which has lost five players and an assistant coach to the professional ranks this offseason.
NOTES: Toews scored 22 goals and added 17 assists as a 17-year-old freshman. He was chosen as the most outstanding player at the NCAA West Regional. He is a candidate to be the captain of Team Canada in the 2007 World Junior Championship.
Rene Bourque (Left Wing) 7/13/2006
NEWS: Bourque signed a two-year deal Thursday to remain with the Blackhawks. The 24-year-old Chicago left wing scored 16 goals and added 18 assists in 77 games this season as a rookie. His 180 shots on goal ranked third on the team to Mark Bell (227) and Kyle Calder (183).
Duncan Keith (Defense) 7/13/2006
NEWS: Keith signed a four-year deal Thursday to remain with the Blackhawks. The 22-year-old Chicago defenseman scored nine goals and added 12 assists in 81 games this season as a rookie.
Mikael Holmqvist (Center) 7/13/2006
NEWS: Holmqvist signed a one-year deal Thursday to remain with the Blackhawks. The 27-year-old Chicago center had 10 goals and 10 assists in 72 games this season. He was acquired from Anaheim last July 30 in a trade for left wing Travis Moen.
Martin Havlat (Left Wing) 7/10/2006
NEWS: Havlat was traded to Chicago along with Bryan Smolinski on Sunday. The left wing missed 58 games last season while playing for Ottawa and had refused to commit to the Senators long-term. He finished with nine goals and seven assists in the regular season and had seven goals and six assists in 10 playoff games.
NOTES: Havlat has 235 points in 298 career games and should provide an instant boost to the Blackhawks' sagging lineup.
Bryan Smolinski (Center) 7/10/2006
NEWS: Smolinski was traded from Ottawa to Chicago on Sunday along with winger Martin Havlat. The center had 17 goals and 31 assists in 81 games for the Senators last season. He's played for five teams in his 14-year career.
Martin Havlat (Left Wing) 4/26/2006
NEWS: Havlat had two goals and an assist in the Senators' 8-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. The victory gave Ottawa a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference first-round series.
NOTES: Havlat played in just 18 games during the regular season due to a shoulder injury, but none of that matters now as he's been lights-out in the postseason. The 25-year-old winger's four playoff goals lead the Senators and his six points are second to Jason Spezza's seven.
Rene Bourque (Left Wing) 4/6/2006
NEWS: Bourque had a goal and two assists in the Blackhawks' 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Wednesday. The 24-year-old Chicago rookie's tally gave his team a 4-1 lead with just 57 seconds left in the opening period.
NOTES: Bourque has been quite a find for the Blackhawks this season. His 16 goals rank third on the team and his 34 points are fourth. Following a stretch of eight games in which he didn't land on the scoresheet, Bourque has two goals and three assists in his last two contests.
Patrick Lalime (Goaltender) 4/3/2006
NEWS: Lalime tore a ligament in his left knee in Saturday's loss to Nashville and is out for the rest of the season. Lalime struggled in his first year with the Blues, getting sent down to the minors for part of the season. The goalie finished 4-18-8 with a 3.64 goals-against average and .881 save percentage.
NOTES: The Blues called up Chris Beckford-Tseu to fill his spot.
Jassen Cullimore (Defense) 3/20/2006
NEWS: Cullimore is likely out of the rest of the season after an MRI exam revealed torn cartilage in his left knee, suffered during Friday's game against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. The Chicago Blackhawks' defenseman had missed nine games earlier this season because of a groin pull. He was listed as day-to-day after Friday's game.
NOTES: Cullimore has one goal and six assists on the season.
Brandon Bochenski (Right Wing) 3/9/2006
NEWS: The Ottawa Senators Thursday dealt Bochenski and a second-round pick in the 2006 draft to the Chicago Blackhawks for veteran Tyler Arnason. Bochenski, a 23-year-old rookie winger, had scored six goals and seven assists for the Senators in 20 games. Most recently he was playing for Binghamton in the AHL, where he appeared in 32 games, scoring 20 goals with 21 assists.
Adam Munro (Goaltender) 3/7/2006
NEWS: Munro was assigned to the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL by the Blackhawks. Starting goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin is returning from a knee sprain, forcing Munro to re-join the Admirals.
NOTES: Munro posted a 3-5-2 record with a 3.00 goals-against average, one shutout and an .893 save percentage in 10 starts after being called up from Norfolk on Dec. 29.
Nikolai Khabibulin (Goaltender) 3/7/2006
NEWS: Khabibulin will return to the Blackhawks' lineup after missing 12 games with a sprained left knee, suffered in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Jan. 20. He is expected to back up Craig Anderson in Tuesday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and start against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
NOTES: Khabibulin has posted a 12-18-3 record with a 3.32 goals-against average, .883 save percentage, and no shutouts.
Nikolai Khabibulin (Goaltender) 3/1/2006
NEWS: Khabibulin is not expected to return to the Blackhawks lineup for another one to two weeks due to a sprained left knee. The Stanley Cup winner suffered the injury in a 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 20 and has missed nine games.
NOTES: Khabibulin has posted a 12-18-3 record with a 3.32 GAA and no shutouts in 33 games for the Blackhawks this season. Craig Anderson and Adam Munro will continue to split the duties in his absence.
Martin Havlat (Left Wing) 3/1/2006
NEWS: Havlat has started practicing with the Ottawa Senators after receiving clearance from his surgeon, although he must avoid contact. The 24-year-old left wing has missed 40 games due to a dislocated right shoulder he suffered during a 4-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 29. He is expected to return to the lineup later this month.
NOTES: Havlat has scored nine goals and 14 points in 16 games for the Senators this season.
Duncan Keith (Defense) 2/3/2006
NEWS: Keith had the first two-goal game of his career in the Blackhawks' 6-5 shootout loss to the Blues on Thursday night.
NOTES: Through 51 games of his rookie season, Keith has seven goals and eight assists.
Adrian Aucoin (Defense) 2/1/2006
NEWS: Aucoin will undergo surgery to repair a dislocated right shoulder. The surgery is tentatively scheduled for some time next week and the Chicago Blackhawks' defenseman will reportedly be out indefinitely.
NOTES: Aucoin was injured in the first period of Sunday's game against the Calgary Flames and did not return. He has six points in 33 games with Chicago this season.
Patrick Lalime (Goaltender) 2/1/2006
NEWS: The Blues recalled Lalime from Peoria of the AHL. Lalime had been waived by St. Louis on Dec. 12, but the goalie successfully passed through re-entry waivers on Wednesday.
NOTES: Lalime was 3-11-4 with a 3.97 goals-against average in 18 games with the Blues this season.
Patrick Sharp (Right Wing) 1/27/2006
NEWS: Sharp missed his fifth straight game with what the Blackhawks reportedly are saying is the flu. He could return as early as Sunday against the Calgary Flames.
NOTES: The Blackhawks' right wing has five goals and eight assists in 41 games this season.
