NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Tennessee's Candace Parker became the fourth woman to dunk in a college game, jamming one-handed on a breakaway against Army on Sunday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The play began when the 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman took an outlet pass from Sidney Spencer. With the large contingent of Lady Vols fans roaring even before the attempt, Parker threw it down as Army's Margaree King looked on helplessly.
It was the second college dunk attempt for Parker, whose first came against Auburn on Feb. 23. She dunked three times in warmups before Sunday's game.
Parker joins Georgeann Wells of West Virginia in 1984, Charlotte Smith of North Carolina in 1994 and Michelle Snow of Tennessee in 2000 as college players to dunk in a game. Lisa Leslie of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks has dunked as a pro.
Wells' first dunk was a one-handed slam off a fullcourt pass from a teammate in 1984, and sparked a huge media frenzy. She did it again a few weeks later.
Snow dunked three times in 2000.
