FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) -Joe Frager was appointed coach at Fairfield, weeks after leading Southern Connecticut State women's basketball team to a Division II title.
Frager succeeds Dianne Nolan, who stepped down after 28 years. Nolan, a five-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference coach of the year, led the Stags to a conference title and four NCAA tournament appearances.
At Southern Connecticut, Frager led the team into the postseason each of his nine years. He had a 189-83 record. He called the Fairfield appointment an ``honor.''
``I am looking forward to returning the women's basketball program to it's rightful spot as a perennial contender and taking it to new heights,'' Frager said.
``His love of the game, his commitment and his experience make him a perfect fit for our basketball program,'' Fairfield athletic director Eugene Doris said. ``He has been successful at each stop of his career, winning national titles and state championships.''
Assistant coach Laura Scinto is joining Frager.
Southern Connecticut beat Florida Gulf Coast, 61-45, in the Division II National Championship game on March 24.
