PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -University of Portland coach Jim Sollars hired Kayla Burt as an assistant, citing the former Washington guard's experience and inspirational return to basketball after a heart attack.
``Kayla was a fine player and an inspiration to her team and the entire Seattle area,'' Sollars said Wednesday. ``She has experience in every area that we need.''
A defibrillator was implanted in Burt's chest after her heart stopped during a New Year's Eve gathering at her off-campus apartment in 2002. Teammates performed CPR until paramedics arrived to take her to the hospital.
After her heart condition was diagnosed, she took a hiatus and served as a student coach. She returned to the team for the 2004-05 season, averaging 9.6 points and 2.9 assists, and was the V Foundation's comeback award winner.
She retired in January 2006, after the defibrillator activated during a game.
Burt replaces Loree Payne, who left to accept an assistant's job with Washington.
