BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Freshmen Ashley Walker and Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 14 points each, leading the Bears past Eastern Washington, 64-45, in the first round of the preseason WNIT.
California (1-0), under first-year coach Joanne Boyle, will play the winner of Friday's New Mexico-Oral Roberts game in Sunday's second round.
Eastern Washington (0-1) was led by sophomore Brittney Osborn with 13 points, but the Eagles were grounded by poor shooting. They converted just 29.4 percent of their shots, and after losing an early lead with 15:30 to go, trailed the rest of the way.
Leading 26-16 at the half, the Bears then removed all doubt as to the outcome with a 13-0 run - sparked by Walker, who scored the first six points of the second half herself.
The Bears' showing was even more impressive considering that 6-foot-3 freshman center Devanei Hampton, a McDonald's All-American like Gray-Lawson, missed the game due to a violation of team rules.
