PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Whitney Ffrench made two free throws in the final seconds to lead St. Joseph's to a 54-52 upset of No. 23 North Carolina State on Sunday.
Trailing 52-51, Ffrench hit both free throws with 2 seconds left to put St. Joseph's (2-0) up by one point. After North Carolina State sent a long pass out of bounds, the Wolfpack were forced to foul. Ayahna Cornish made one of two free throw with 1.3 seconds left for the final margin.
Ffrench then intercepted the inbounds pass to ensure the win.
Faith Schutte scored a career-high 16 points and Ffrench had 11 points, finishing 7-of-8 from the line for the Mountain Hawks.
Ashley Key led North Carolina State (1-1) with 11 points and Khadijah Whittington and Tiffany Stansbury scored 10 apiece.
North Carolina State led 17-14 with 7:18 remaining. A pair of free throws by Ffrench put St. Joseph's up 21-20 at the half.
The Wolfpack went on a 17-7 run to open the second half, capped by Keisha Brown's layup at 12:02, for a 37-28 lead. St. Joseph's used a 12-2 run to cut the margin to 45-43 on a layup by Schutte with 5:18 remaining.
