CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina likes to think it has one of the quickest teams in the country.
North Carolina made believers out of Liberty after the No. 7 Tar Heels routed the Lady Flames 87-36.
Ivory Latta scored 20 points and Erlana Larkins added 15 for North Carolina (2-0).
``That's our strength,'' North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell said. ``I love the up-tempo game. The players like it, too. ``We may give up a few layups here and there on defense, but we'll make up for it on the other end. One thing is for sure: We're not boring.''
Megan Frazee had 13 points and 15 rebounds for Liberty (1-1). But no other player broke double figures as the Lady Flames connected on just 10 of 53 attempts (18.9 percent) from the field.
The Tar Heels took advantage of Liberty's 33 turnovers and outrebounded the Lady Flames 48-38.
``It's really hard to simulate that kind of speed in practice,'' Liberty coach Carey Green said. ``What am I supposed to do? Bring in a bunch of track stars to beat us up in practice? Their speed is just undeniable.''
Latta hit four of her first five shots, including two 3-pointers to help North Carolina build a 49-19 lead at the half. Liberty went 10:44 without a basket in a stretch that spanned halftime.
The Tar Heels scored on 15 of its first 20 possessions and jumped out to a 31-9 lead just 8:18 into the game.
North Carolina held Liberty to 5-for-19 shooting (26.3 percent) in the first half. Liberty turned the ball over on 17 of its first 24 possessions and had 24 turnovers by the half.
The Tar Heels led by 78-31 when they cleared their bench with 5:20 to play. The final margin was their biggest lead, coming on a free throw by freshman Heather Claytor with 44 seconds left.
