NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Caroline Williams scored a career-high 23 points to lead No. 20 Vanderbilt to a 83-39 victory over Charleston Southern on Friday.
Vanderbilt (4-1) opened the game with a 10-2 run, then extended the lead to 16-6 on a 3-pointer by Williams with 12 minutes to go in the first period. Williams made five 3-pointers in the half, the last giving the Commodores a 29-9 lead with 7 minutes remaining.
Charleston Southern (1-2) trailed 41-16 at the break, but cut the deficit to 49-27 with 14:58 remaining when Keena Wicker completed a three-point play. Vanderbilt then scored six straight points to start a 28-4 run. Liz Sherwood's basket with 6:23 left capped the run and gave the Commodores a 77-31 lead before Shaunte Small scored on consecutive possessions for the Lady Buccaneers.
Vanderbilt hit its first 15 free-throw attempts before Nicole Jules missed the front end of a bonus with 2:40 remaining. It was the Commodores' final attempt, and they finished 15-for-16 from the line.
Carla Thomas shot 10-for-10 from the line and finished with 18 points, and Sherwood had 14 for Vanderbilt. Small finished with 11 points and Rachel Potts 10 for Charleston Southern. Jules shot 5-for-5 and had 10 points.
Williams, who finished with a career-best seven 3-pointers - one short of a school single-game record - scored her previous career high of 21 points in Vanderbilt's last game, an 80-29 win Tuesday over Alabama A&M.
