MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Kelly Roysland had 19 points and seven rebounds and Liz Podominick added 16 points and 11 boards to lead No. 15 Minnesota to a 73-67 win over Wisconsin on Thursday night.
Roysland and Podominick combined to power the Gophers (9-2, 2-0 Big Ten) with forward Jamie Broback struggling with a knee injury.
Wisconsin's Jolene Anderson tied a career high with 29 points, including a 3-pointer with six seconds left to cut the Gophers lead to 71-67. But Podominick made two free throws to seal it for Minnesota.
Broback left the game after hurting her left knee during a first-period scramble under the Wisconsin basket. She returned midway through the second half, a black brace stretched over her knee.
The injury limited Broback's mobility, but her presence under both baskets helped the Gophers hold off the stubborn Badgers. She fed Shannon Bolden on a fast break to give Minnesota a 62-48 lead with 5:37 left.
When Broback was out, the Gophers held their own behind strong perimeter play and Podominick got help under the basket from sophomores Lauren Lacey and Natasha Williams.
Shannon Schonrock hit four 3-pointers for the Gophers.
Wisconsin (6-8, 1-2) missed its first nine shots from the floor while Minnesota jumped to a 7-0 lead. But the Badgers stormed to a 21-15 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Ashley Josephson and Anderson.
Minnesota took the lead for good, 24-23, on a basket by Roysland with 2:39 left in the first half. Wisconsin pulled to within 33-31 early in the second half on a basket by Anderson, but a free throw by Podominick and a three-pointer by Schonrock put the Gophers back in control.
