BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -Megan Vogel scored 22 points and South Dakota State forced 25 turnovers and beat No. 19 Southern California 67-63 Friday.
The Jackrabbits (2-0) were supposed to be a convenient stop for the Women of Troy on their way to Sunday's matchup with No. 6 Ohio State. However, South Dakota State (2-0) forged a 15-point lead and held off a furious rally down the stretch.
Jennifer Warkenthien and 13 points and Andrea Verdegan added 10 as the Jackrabbits posted their first win over a ranked team in three tries since moving to NCAA Division I. They are 27-16 against Division I opponents since moving up at the start of the 2004-05 season.
Eshaya Murphy had four 3-pointers, 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Women of Troy. Chloe Kerr had 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Jackrabbits took advantage of USC's foul troubles. Three USC players fouled out and four others finished with four fouls. SDSU went 36-for-47 from the free-throw line - including Vogel's 15-for-18 - to overcome 26 percent shooting from the field.
USC (1-1), which beat South Dakota State 66-59 in the teams' only previous meeting, was 19-for-23 from the line.
The second half featured a series of runs by both teams. The first, an eigh-point run by USC, cut the Jackrabbits' lead to 43-36. However, SDSU answered with an 11-2 run to go up 54-38 with 6 minutes remaining.
The Women of Troy made one last run, slicing the lead to 64-61 in the closing seconds. SDSU did not make a basket in the last 8:16 of the game, but held on from the line.
